Il libro prende l’avvio dall’ipotesi nebulare di Kant-Laplace sull’origine del mondo a partire da una nuvola e si conclude con tre ipotesi letterarie sulla fine del mondo collegata a una nuvola. Nel volume si affiancano due percorsi: un itinerario cronologico, mediante il quale si ricostruisce la “storia culturale” delle nuvole da Talete a Don DeLillo; un “tracciato” tematico in cui si affrontano una serie di questioni associate alle nuvole e di rilevanza solo marginalmente meteorologica (la forma delle nuvole e le possibili tassonomie che questa implica, le nuvole e i terremoti, le nuvole e i demoni, le nuvole “terrestri”). Viste “da vicino”, le nuvole mostrano la loro ambivalenza costitutiva: da un lato rinviano a un modo d’essere distratto e stralunato, lontano dalla realtà ordinaria, ma dall’altro pongono l’uomo proprio di fronte a quella realtà dalla quale sembrerebbero distoglierlo. Come il dio della filosofia eraclitea le nuvole sono duplici, non temono la contraddizione, sopportano gli opposti. Alla fine, siano esse le minacciose nubi dell’apocalisse o l’oggetto di sublimi immaginazioni poetiche, le nuvole è di noi che “parlano”.

This work is intended to offer to anyone still intending to devote himself to the Socratic problem a reliable means of approach by providing, first of all, a complete history of the problem itself, from its first appearance during Socrates' lifetime up to the present day. Desire for love, desire for knowledge, desire to possess, desire to desire and to be desired: our life is shaped by what we want and by our efforts to achieve it. Hailed by philosophers and psychoanalysts as the core of human identity, desire informs not only our actions, but also our dreams and hopes and their sublimation into art and literature. This collection of essays explores how desire is portrayed in modern and contemporary Italian literature, by analysing some of the most interesting literary figures of the last two centuries. The authors of this collection approach desire from various perspectives – psychoanalytical, sociological, political and semiotic – in order to show that desire, albeit at times not explicitly mentioned, pervades the literary works of modern and contemporary Italy, either as a central theme or as the secret motor of the narrative.
