Il punto d’avvio della sua ricerca è da rintracciare nell’individuazione della rottura dell’equilibrio economico dell’antichità con l’incontro-scontro tra arabi e occidentali: tale evento dette luogo a un nuovo rapporto di forze che modificò la storia sociale, economica e politica di tutto il mondo allora conosciuto. Henri Pirenne nacque a Vervies, in Belgio, nel 1862. A soli ventiquattro anni fu chiamato a ricoprire la cattedra di Storia medievale all’Università di Gand. Quando, durante la prima guerra mondiale, il Belgio venne occupato dai tedeschi, fu tra i più fermi sostenitori della necessità di ribellarsi all’invasione. Arrestato nel 1916, rimase prigioniero in Germania fino alla fine della guerra. Morì nel 1935. Di Henri Pirenne la Newton Compton ha pubblicato Storia d’Europa dalle invasioni al XVI secolo, Le città del Medioevo, Storia economica e sociale del Medioevo, Maometto e Carlomagno.
