Un viaggio sulle tracce di otto libri perduti, libri mitici come le miniere nella corsa all'oro: tutti i cercatori sono sicuri che esistono e che saranno proprio loro a trovarle, ma nessuno in realtà ha prove certe e percorsi sicuri. I segni sono labili, le speranze di ritrovare quelle pagine sono scarse. Eppure il viaggio vale la pena. Questo libro racconta la storia di altri libri che c'erano e non ci sono più: i libri perduti non sono libri dimenticati oppure libri pensati dall'autore e mai nati, sono quelli che l'autore ha scritto, che qualcuno ha visto, magari ha anche letto, e che poi sono stati distrutti o dei quali non si è saputo più niente. Libri bruciati, strappati, rubati, semplicemente scomparsi, ma che sono stati scritti, che sono sicuramenti esistiti. La ricerca di una perfezione irraggiungibile, circostanze ambientali e storiche avverse, la censura e persino l'autocensura, la volontà degli eredi: i motivi che portano alla perdita dei libri sono i più diversi. Uno di questi libri Giorgio van Straten l'ha avuto nelle proprie mani, ma non è stato capace di salvarlo. È proprio da quella perdita che parte la sua ricerca di otto libri, il racconto di otto storie a giro per il mondo sulle tracce di pagine che non ci sono più, ma che si può sempre sperare di ritrovare. L'autore si fa viaggiatore, investigatore, spia, si attacca a indizi, informazioni attendibili o meno, ascolta amici ed esperti per avere qualche elemento in più. Ogni libro perduto ha la sua storia che non assomiglia alle altre, se non per qualche particolare che stabilisce strane relazioni. Partendo dalla casa di Firenze di Romano Bilenchi per poi passare all'Inghilterra di Byron e di Sylvia Plath, alla Francia degli anni Venti dove ha vissuto Hemingway, attraverso la Russia di Gogol e la frontiera spagnola che Walter Benjamin cerca di superare per sfuggire al proprio destino, dalla Polonia occupata dai nazisti dove Bruno Schulz viene ucciso per un dispetto fra ufficiali tedeschi fino a un remoto paesino del Canada dove si è rifugiato Malcolm Lowry... Perché magari un giorno, da qualche parte, uno di questi libri che sembra perduto per sempre potrebbe miracolosamente riemergere. «Ogni volta che nella vita mi sono imbattuto in un libro perduto, ho provato la stessa sensazione che mi prendeva leggendo da piccolo certi romanzi che parlavano di giardini segreti, teleferiche misteriose, castelli abbandonati: l'occasione di una ricerca, il fascino di ciò che sfugge e la speranza di essere l'eroe capace di risolvere il mistero. In quei romanzi da ragazzi in effetti la soluzione arrivava verso la fine del libro, suggerita dall'autore ovviamente, anche se a me sembrava frutto della mia attenzione e della mia fantasia.»
