A Passionate Apprentice written by Virginia Woolf and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. Behind the loss and confusion, however, and always near the surface of her writing is a constructive force at work - a powerful impulse towards health. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. This early chronicle represents the beginning of the future Virginia Woolf's apprenticeship as a novelist. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. In Woolf's words, 'Here is a volume of fairly acute life (the first really lived year of my life).'

As James Joyce was working on Finnegans Wake, he asked his friend T.S. Eliot to shepherd an early extract, simply known as 'Work in Progress' into print. This celebrated episode, Anna Livia Plurabelle, was the first part of Joyce's extraordinary text to be published in England, printed in pamphlet form in 1930. It became the best-known section of Finnegans Wake, and one of Joyce's favourites; revised and published independently more times than any other piece. This new edition in the Faber Modern Classics series includes a new foreword by Edna O'Brien. 'His writing is not about something; it is that something itself.' Samuel Beckett

The story behind everyone’s favorite snack—Nutella. Nutella has its roots in a simple hazelnut and chocolate paste sold as Pasta Gianduja by Pietro Ferrero at his bakery in Alba, the center of Italy’s hazelnut-producing region in the Piedmont. While originally sold as a solid block, Ferrero started offering a creamy version called Supercrema in 1951. In 1964, Ferrero’s son Michele reformulated Supercrema and launched it throughout Europe as Nutella—a name easy to understand and remember in the greatest number of languages. Nutella was an instant hit and is one of the first Italian products to have spread across the world. On the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, Gigi Padovani, a Nutella expert and enthusiast, traces the history and evolution of Nutella, including the rise of an almost cult following and its celebration in pop culture, ranging from movies to literature. He then analyzes the key moments of the industry’s strategies—innovation, internationalization, a good relationship with the consumers—which have made Nutella a legend to this day. This is a lesson that excellence lasts.

Cats Of Copenhagen written by James Joyce and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-16 with Juvenile Fiction categories.

The first-ever U.S. edition of this delightful gem based on a letter Joyce wrote to his grandson, revealing the modernist master’s playful side—filled with one-of-a-kind illustrations—the perfect gift for Joyce fans and cat lovers alike. The Cats of Copenhagen was first written for James Joyce’s most beloved audience, his only grandson, Stephen James Joyce, and sent in a letter dated September 5, 1936. Cats were clearly a common currency between Joyce and his grandson. In early August 1936, Joyce sent Stephen “a little cat filled with sweets”—a kind of Trojan cat meant to outwit grown-ups. A few weeks later, Joyce penned a letter from Copenhagen that begins “Alas! I cannot send you a Copenhagen cat because there are no cats in Copenhagen.” The letter reveals the modernist master at his most playful, yet Joyce’s Copenhagen has a keen, anti-authoritarian quality that transcends the mere whimsy of a children’s story. Only recently rediscovered, this marks the inaugural U.S. publication of The Cats of Copenhagen, a treasure for readers of all ages. A rare addition to Joyce’s known body of work, it is a joy to see this exquisite story in print at last.

“An impressively accomplished retelling of the Gatsby story,” in which a Russian businessman engages an impoverished bookseller’s help pursuing a lover. (Los Angeles Review of Books) On a rainy afternoon in London’s old Chelsea, a charming multi-billionaire Russian oligarch, Gorsky, walks into an ailing bookshop and writes the first of several quarter-of-a-million pound checks. With that money, Gorsky has tasked Nikola, the store’s bored and brilliant clerk, with sourcing books for a massive personal library, which will be housed in the magnificent, palatial home Gorsky happens to be building immediately next to Nikola’s own modest dwelling. Gorsky needs a tasteful collection of Russian literature to woo a long-lost love―no matter that she happens to be married to an Englishman. His passion for her surpasses even his immeasurable wealth, and Nikola will be drawn into a world of opulence, greed, capitalism, sex, and beauty as he helps Gorsky pursue this doomed love. “An accomplished retelling of an American classic.” —Tablet “It’s a very clever idea: to update "The Great Gatsby” by making the bootlegger into a Russian arms-dealing billionaire and transplanting the action from Jazz Age New York to 21st-century London, a city increasingly shaped by global wealth.” —The New York Times Book Review “A tense, witty page-turner.” —The Spectator “Entertaining.” —New York Journal of Books “[A] kind of novel-length love letter to the written word.” —Jewish Book Council
