Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Excerpt from The Story of Thought and Feeling This little book is intended to serve as an introduction to the study of some portions of the field of Psychology. It deals with the elementary phenomena of mental life in a more or less concrete and simple fashion, and avoids technicalities as much as possible; not entirely, however, because no clear notions can be obtained in any department of human knowledge without the use of at least a few technical terms. My chief object has been to give a clear outline, free from discussions on method and free from confusing detail. The book was written before Professor Baldwin's volume in the present series (The Story of the Mind) was published. I may perhaps be permitted to recommend that work as a most valuable sequel to the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Excerpt from The Great Modern American Stories: An Anthology With Miss Edith Wyatt's story I had the same sort of difficulty in finding anything definitely dramatic among her studies of Chicago life, as I had in finding a story among Stoddard's South Sea Idyls. She called them Every One His Own Way, perhaps because she could not think of a more distinctive name for them. But they were all exquisite things, most artistic and most realistic things, delicate por traits of life worthy of equal place with the stories and studies of those unrivalled sisters three, Miss Jewett, and Mrs. Wilkins Freeman and Miss Alice Brown whom I have put here in their rare succession.
