"Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. This book is a collection of eight short stories about kids with various disabilities. The disabled characters explain how they want to be treated and included, just like everyone else. Their dreams, hopes, and desires are the same as those non-disabled. They teach others how to treat them normally, how they want to be included as much as they possibly can be, and how to not pity them.I am a regular elementary, special education, and community college teacher. I have been legally blind most of my life and I am now totally blind. I have witnessed, and personally experienced, what I am writing about in these stories. I have read this book to my students, and they have been enthralled and encouraged. They would beg me to write another story that day. Although the stories are written at about the third or fourth grade reading level, I have read them to students in grades one through six, and they all were equally inspired.Having a disability has given me numerous, marvelous gifts. My passionate hope is that readers will begin to realize the giftedness of those with disabilities, and count them among their most treasured friends.
