For more than sixty years, The Wall Street Journal has prided itself not just on its serious journalism, but also on the whimsical and arcane stories that amuse and delight its readers. In that regard, animal stories have proven to be the most beloved of all. Now, veteran Journal reporter and Page One editor Ken Wells gathers the finest, funniest, and most fascinating of these animal tales in one exceptional book. Here are lighthearted, witty stories of breakthroughs in goldfish surgery, the untiring efforts of British animal lovers who guide lovesick toads across dangerous motorways, and the quest to tame doggy anxieties by prescribing the human pacifier Prozac. Other pieces reflect on mankind's impact on the animal kingdom: a close-up look at the nascent fish-rights movement, the retirement of U.S. Air Force chimpanzees that once soared through space, and ongoing scientific efforts to defeat that most hardy enemy -- the cockroach. Each of these fifty-odd stories -- from the outlandish to the poignant -- exemplifies the superb feature writing that makes The Wall Street Journal one of America's best-written newspapers. This charming and utterly captivating collection will be a joy not only to animal lovers, but to all those who appreciate artful storytelling by writers who are obviously having a wonderful time spinning the tales.

A century on from its original Edwardian construction, this contemporary portrait of a street in inner Manchester tells the stories of today's residents. Born in eighteen countries from four continents, the accounts told by the residents themselves narrate their journeys from nomadic herding in Somalia to conscientious objection in post-war Germany and the UK, and from arranged marriages in South Asia to arriving from rural Ireland to find work. With a common theme of making a new life in Manchester, this is an important account of a successful multicultural community in an ever-divided world. Profiling today's residents alongside those who occupied their homes at the time of the 1911 census, Stories of a Manchester Street provides a colourful reflection on the changes, resilience and sense of community that lives just around the corner on our inner-city streets.

Stories From The Streets is a compilation of stories about the street children served by Street Girls Aid in Accra, Ghana. The powerful and inspirational success stories showcase what it is like to live in the heart of West Africa and how the individual's resilience to survive combined with the support of Street Girls Aid helped transform their confidence, dreams and their future. This book is a passionate celebration of Street Girls Aid, Ghana, whose mission is "serving street children - impacting generations." It is also a unique tribute to the success of the many children, girls and young women whose stories are presented. The twenty inspiring stories shared, represent the many thousands of children who have gone through the Street Girls Aid's programs, and represent the twenty years that Street Girls Aid has consistently served children on the street. Stories From The Streets brings together a careful selection of relevant information, lessons learned and for organizations already working in the field of vulnerable children, or those yet to do so, a guide for their project implementation. This book has intentionally moved away from dwelling on the many challenges facing the street children and rather, concentrates on the successes. After reading this book, readers will have gained a broader perspective of issues and the realities of street children. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will create an on-going source of income to support the next 20 years of Street Girls Aid mission, "Serving Street Children - Impacting Generations."

Stories From The Street written by David Nixon and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-01 with Religion categories.

Stories from the Street is a theological exploration of interviews with men and women who had experienced homelessness at some stage in their lives. Framed within a theology of story and a theology of liberation, Nixon suggests that story is not only a vehicle for creating human transformation but it is one of God's chosen means of effecting change. Short biographies of twelve characters are examined under themes including: crises in health and relationships, self-harm and suicide, anger and pain, God and the Bible. Expanding the existing literature of contextual theology, this book provides an alternative focus to a church-shaped mission by advocating with, and for, a very marginal group; suggesting that their experiences have much to teach the church. Churches are perceived as being active in terms of pastoral work, but reluctant to ask more profound questions about why homelessness exists at all. A theology of homelessness suggests not just a God of the homeless, but a homeless God, who shares stories and provides hope. Engaging with contemporary political and cultural debates about poverty, housing and public spending, Nixon presents a unique theological exploration of homeless people, suffering, hope and the human condition.
