Excerpt from Stories of a Country Doctor And last and best of all, dear reader, I desired to make something out of the enter prise. If I do there will be rejoicing at our house when the receipts come in. There will be a feast in which the timbrel and the hewgag will be sounded, and I promise you that the widow and the orphan shall not be forgotten. Complaint may be made that the per sonal pronoun I has been used Oftener than it should have been. This may be true. My friends say that I have a plenty Of that very necessary faculty called self esteem. TO this I also plead guilty and put myself upon the country. AS a defense, however, I desire to say that most Of the things written about in this book have a personal relationship to myself, and, being too modest to put myself on an equality with the editors and the Lord, by saying we I was compelled to say I; so the 'i's' seem to have it. Claire Louise Caudill is one of those rare people who have become legends in their own time. She delivered more than 8,000 babies over the years, in and around her hometown of Morehead, Kentucky. In 1995 she was named Country Doctor of the Year, and she has been interviewed by CBS and featured in USA Today. Dr. Caudill stopped delivering babies when she turned seventy, but today, at the age of 86, she remains in practice- her patients won't let her retire! Her friend Susie Halbleib has served as nurse in Caudill's clinic since it opened in 1946. Caudill was instrumental in establishing a hospital in Morehead and for more than fifty years has worked to improve health care for the people of the Kentucky hill country. The first part of Country Doctor tells Caudill's story through interviews with Dr. Caudill, Nurse Halblieb, and the people who know them best. The second reproduces a one-woman, two-act play entitled Me 'n Susie, inspired by Dr. Caudill's warmth and humor. Together, the play and interviews provide a vivid picture of life in the hills of Eastern Kentucky and a remarkable portrait of two great women in medicine.

In 1966 John Berger spent three months in the Forest of Dean shadowing an English country GP, John Sassall. Sassall is a fortunate man - his work occupies and fulfils him, he lives amongst the patients he treats, the line between his life and his work is happily blurred. In A Fortunate Man, Berger's text and the photography of Jean Mohr reveal with extraordinary intensity the life of a remarkable man. It is a portrait of one selfless individual and the rural community for which he became the hub. Drawing on psychology, biography and medicine A Fortunate Man is a portrait of sacrifice. It is also a profound exploration of what it means to be a doctor, to serve a community and to heal. With a new introduction by writer and GP, Gavin Francis.

Stories Of A Country Doctor written by Robert W. Denton and has been published by Selah Publishing Group this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Robert Denton grew up in small mining towns of the Mojave desert, himself the son of a small town doctor. Following his father's footsteps, he attended medical school at Northwestern in Chicago, where he met and married Betty Spaeth. He and Betty then moved to Bishop, California, a small town in a wild setting between the fourteen thousand foot mountains of the Sierra and White mountain ranges, where Bob established himself as a country doctor for fifty-seven years. Dr. Denton is an accomplished story teller, and in this anecdotal autobiography he recounts fascinating tales stretching from his father's experiences growing up on a farm at the turn of the twentieth century to his own many adventures as a country doctor in the Eastern Sierra. Apart from their entertainment value, many of these stories are of considerable historical interest as well. From gun fights, plane crashes and backcountry rescues to tales of political intrigue, missionary work in exotic locales and accounts of the author's unique experiences as a traditional, do everything country doctor, this book captivates from start to finish.
