Excerpt from Stories of Legendary Heroes If you had landed on the shores of the North Sea fourteen or fifteen centuries ago, the sea guard would have come galloping down to the beach on his horse. He would have shaken his mighty spear and demanded, "Who are you? Where do you come from? Are you false spies come to search out our country?" Do you mean peace or war? If you had shown him that you were friends, he would have said, Come to the hall where my lord abides. I will guide you, and my men shall watch over your vessel until your return. Just imagine that you are walking up the road after the sea guard. You wear coats of mail, of course, made of rings closely interwoven. You have spears and bucklers and helmets and swords and battle-axes. They ring and clink and flash in the sunshine, as you march up the rough pathway. At last you come to a long building, where the lord of the land makes his home. As the guard leads you in, you see shields leaning against the walls and spears clustered in the corners. You see a row of stone hearths running up the middle of the hall. On the hearths are blazing fires, where great joints of meat are roasting. Along the sides of the hall are little alcoves, where the thanes, or followers of the lord, sleep. The guard leads you to the farther end of the room, where there is a raised platform, and presents you to his lord. Excerpt from Legendary Heroes of Ireland The early Celts have little literature other than these stories, which have been handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Most of the tales in this book have been taken from the Ossianic Saga. Whether Finn belongs to history or mythology detracts no jot from the absorbing inter est Of his exploits. I have tried to make the story of Finn something of a connected narrative. To do this I have taken incidents from various versions; I have left out much unsuitable to children, and I have changed some inci dents to conform to the modern standards Of morals. The chronology of arrangement is my own, but I have tried to preserve the spirit of the originals. No collection Of Irish folk stories could be brought out were it not for the work Of those many scholars who have spent years in collecting and translating the tales of the Celtic race. To our American lin guist, Jeremiah Curtin, and to the Irish scholars Sir Douglas Hyde, Dr. Joyce, Eleanor Hull, Lady Gregory, T. W. Rolleston and others, my thanks are due. Their Splendid research work has made pos sible such a volume as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old World Hero Stories IT is not so many years since the school history was practi cally a dry chronicle of discoveries, settlements, and wars. A narrative that was in any degree personal and anecdotal was gazed upon askance as being necessarily unscholarly and undignified. Discoveries and settlements and wars there must be, and accounts of them must be written and made familiar; but the one and only way to bring past issues into the life of a child with any vividness is first to interest him in the actors themselves. Carlyle says that history is at bot tom the history of the great men who have worked here. There is no better introduction to the study of the Augustan Age than the story of the life of Augustus; no better way to arouse interest in the philosophy of Plato and Socrates than the tales of their lives. The real-life individuals whose stories are recounted in this book were vastly dissimilar from one another. The child abbess, Mère Angélique, who ruled her convent and fought against misbehaving abbesses who eschewed seriousness, does not immediately bring to mind Hannibal. The great Montrose, with his poems and his perfumed love locks, his allegiance to his cause, his gallantry, and his death, to which he went joyfully attired like a bridegroom to meet his bride, does not appear to be a kindred spirit of Palissy the Potter, a withered and wrinkled figure blackened by the smoke of his furnaces. It is a considerable distance from gentle Miss Nightingale, who tended to injured dogs as a child and to wounded soldiers as an adult, to Charles Gordon, who played pranks in school, commanded a Chinese army, and watched alone at Khartoum, encircled by ruthless enemies, yearning for the sight of the British flag and the sound of bagpipes that he never beheld or heard. However, these people, as well as all the other characters whose narratives are told, shared a common trait: they were sincere, although they undoubtedly did not endlessly talk about their earnestness. It came naturally to them, and they enjoyed it. Their hearts were committed to two things: doing their utmost and maintaining their integrity.

History is filled with myth. Heroes and icons from our distant past are no longer remembered by people who actually experienced them. They are remembered by the stories passed down from generation to generation. After so many centuries have passed, it is often difficult to discern who was truly alive, and who lived only in the minds of the storytellers. Fictional beings are no less capable than real-life heroes of teaching society a lesson, or exemplifying what the reader believes is right and just, or downright evil. Whether or not the characters in a story were ever alive is a decision each reader will have to make on their own. Regardless of when or where the characters may have lived, each story in this collection will share with the reader some moral lesson that applies to the world today. Classic Legendary Hero Stories includes characters from a variety of places and time periods, including: Gilgamesh; Young David (Goliath's foe); Odysseus; Beowulf; El Cid; Richard Lionheart; Robin Hood; King Arthur; and Rama the Indian Prince.
