Excerpt from Old World Hero Stories IT is not so many years since the school history was practi cally a dry chronicle of discoveries, settlements, and wars. A narrative that was in any degree personal and anecdotal was gazed upon askance as being necessarily unscholarly and undignified. Discoveries and settlements and wars there must be, and accounts of them must be written and made familiar; but the one and only way to bring past issues into the life of a child with any vividness is first to interest him in the actors themselves. Carlyle says that history is at bot tom the history of the great men who have worked here. There is no better introduction to the study of the Augustan Age than the story of the life of Augustus; no better way to arouse interest in the philosophy of Plato and Socrates than the tales of their lives. Excerpt from American Hero Stories What would this accomplish? At the end of the reading the children would be on good/terms with twenty-five or more of the chief actors in the story of the United States; they would be well prepared for a real history, and, best of all, they would look forward to it, not with dread, but with pleasant anticipation. Excerpt from Heroes Every Child Should Know: Tales for Young People of All the World's Heroes in All Ages They had worked and thought and dreamed only a little time before they began to explain the marvelous earth on which they found themselves and the strange things that happened in it; the vastness and beauty of the fields, woods, sky and sea, the force of the wind, the com ing and going of the day and night, the warmth of sum mer when everything grew, and the cold of winter when everything died, the rush of the storm and the terrible brightness Of the lightning. They had no idea of what we call law or force; they could not think of anything being moved or any noise being made unless there was some one like themselves to move things and make sounds; and so they made stories of gods and giants and heroes and nymphs and fawns; and the myths, which are poetic explanations of the world and of the life of men in it, came into being. Excerpt from Stories of Legendary Heroes Such feasts as these were among the greatest pleasures of our ancestors. The men who received the gifts were always those who had been brave in battle, those who had risked their lives to defend their lord or to win trea sures for their people. As the years passed, the gleemen began to sing songs of their courageous deeds. By and by, most Of the names were forgotten, and the brave acts were all told as if they had been the work of some one hero. They grew bigger and bigger whenever they were sung. If a man had killed a bear, the song was likely to have it that he had overcome a giant. If he had killed a serpent, the serpent was sure to appear in the song as a dragon, then as a fire-breathing dragon; and so the stories increased. Thus it was that the story of Beowulf grew. When the people who lived about the North Sea came over to England, they still sang the old hero songs. A little while ago, a thousand years or more, some one put these songs together and gave us the poem Beowulf as we now have it. Excerpt from Stories of Heroic Deeds: For Boys and Girls IN preparing this little book, three things have been kept constantly in mind - the plan of the Whole series, the thought and sentiment expressed in each lesson, and the language used to express the thought. The main feature of the plan is to furnish pu pils interesting historical stories for the purpose of giving them a taste for the study of history, to enable them to distinguish between fact and fiction, and to stimulate them to high endeavor by noble ex ample. In selecting, preparing, and arranging the sto ries, care has been taken that the thought is such as to be readily understood, and that on the Whole it tends to awaken the higher emotions. The moral lesson involved should be absorbed rather than learned, and the teacher should beware of destroying the value of any lesson by dealing out moral pap. The language is that of common life, such as the pupil hears every day from parent, friend, and teacher - such as the morning newspaper brings, and such as is necessary for him to master in its printed and written forms in the shortest possible time. When a word is unknown, the teacher should develop its meaning before permitting the lesson to go on. The interest in the story will be a sufficient stimulus to secure the best of attention, and the highest excellence in delivery. In the use of language, it is far better that pupils should be obliged to stretch upward rather than be remanded to the nursery. Baby-talk should no more be revived than long-clothes, and the time spent in writing stories in words of one syllable might be used to a much better purpose. The history of the Do-as-you-likes speaks for itself. It is a fancy story rather than a myth, but it is one that children will like, long before they will understand its whole significance; and we much doubt whether the Rev. Charles Kingsley ever produced a more valuable and original book than water-babies, from which this story is taken.
