Excerpt from Stories of the King For more than a thousand years the tales and romances which cluster round the name of King Arthur have been told and retold to successive generations of delighted hearers and readers. Each teller has related his story in his own way, preserving the original thread of narrative unbroken, and borrowing more or less from his predecessors, but giving to the whole a color and setting adapted to the intelligence and tastes of his particular audience. Thus the Welsh bards of the tenth century repeated certain of the romances in such manner as to appeal most strongly to the minds and feelings of their countrymen. The French poets of a later time put these romances into a different form and invented new ones for the amusement of the fashionable people of their day. A scholarly Englishman of the fifteenth century collected all the King Arthur legends he could find and rewrote them for the entertainment of the lords and ladies whom he knew. A poet laureate of the nineteenth century selected a few of the most pleasing romances and from them produced the Idylls of the King for the perpetual delight of minds mature and poetically inclined. Excerpt from The King of the Golden River: And Other Stories The youngest brother, Gluck, was as com pletely opposed, in both appearance and char acter, to his seniors as could possibly be imag ined or desired. He was not above twelve years Old, fair, blue-eyed, and kind in temper to every living thing. He did not, of course, agree particularly well with his brothers, or rather, they did not agree with him. He was usually appointed to the honorable office of turnspit, when there was anything to roast, which was not Often for, to do the brothers justice, they were hardly less sparing upon themselves than Upon other people. At other times he used to clean the Shoes, floors, and sometimes the plates, occasionally getting what was left on them, by way of encouragement, and awholesale quantity of dry blows, by way of education. Excerpt from The King's Story Book I am willing to admit that in a few cases in the pre sent volume the appeal has not resulted so well as could have been desired. Robert Louis Stevenson's story of the Black Arrow, Dr. Conan Doyle's story of Sedgmoor, Sir Walter Besant's account of the Derwentwater rebellion, and others, at once occur to the mind as gems one would have liked to see placed in the same setting with Scott, Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, and the rest. But even with these omis sions, due to the inexorable law of copyright, not to editorial choice, the present collection of historical stories will, I think, be found of value as well as of interest. Excerpt from Stories From King Arthur: And His Round Table More than fifteen centuries ago, England was inhabited by a Celtic race known as the Britons; but, in the first century of the Christian era, they were conquered by the Romans, who added Britain to their vast empire. When, in the fifth century, the Romans withdrew, the unhappy Britons had forgotten how to govern and how to defend themselves, and fell an easy prey to many enemies. Picts from Scotland invaded the north, Scots from Ireland plundered the west, and the Angles and Saxons poured across the seas and wasted the land. Many of the Britons were slain; those who escaped sought refuge in the mountainous parts of the west from Cornwall to the Firth of Clyde. There they took the name of the Cymry, which means the "Brethren," though the people then in England, unable to understand their language, spoke of them contemptuously as the "Welsh." or the "Strangers." The struggle went on between the two races and nowhere more fiercely than in the south-west, where the invaders set up the Kingdom of Wessex; but at last there arose among the Britons a great chieftain called Arthur. And so in history, Arthur, the hero of such a mass of romantic story, is little more than a name. In the reign of the third Norman king, Henry I., there lived a Welsh priest known as Geoffrey of Monmouth, who wrote a "History of British Kings." It is quite certain that he did not write history, but he collected legends about British heroes, and invented stories of his own. Excerpt from Stories of the Days of King Arthur No other merit or importance is claimed for this book than that of a compilation; but it is, so far as the writer is aware, the most complete epitome of the Arthurian Legends that has yet been prepared for the use of young readers./ More than one modernized version of the work of Sir Thomas Mallory has been published; but every student of the legends will be aware that there were many of which Mallory, in the compilation of his narrative, took no account; and the substance of several of these has been embodied in the present work. For the story of Merlin, recourse has been had to the version of the old romance given by Ellis in his "Early English Metrical Romances." The quaint story of Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight is adapted from the edition of that legend which is included among the publications of tho Early English Text Society; while to Lady Charlotte Guest's "Mabinogion" the writer is indebted for the story of Geraint and Enid, and also for the romance of Ewaine and the Lady of the Fountain. It is obvious that in a single volume of the bulk of the present there could not be included more than a selection from the great mass of legends which during several centuries accumulated round the mighty though shadowy figure of Arthur. The aim of the writer has been to make choice of such of these stories and traditions as were most likely to captivate the imagination or excite the attention of tho boy-readers of this generation; to cast them, so far as possible, into the shape of a connected narrative and regular sequence of events; and to preserve so much of the quaint style of Mallory as is consistent with perfect clearness.
