The small business success story of New Zealand's first craft beer & the revolution it started. This is the story of a revolution – a very Kiwi kind of revolution, involving more beer than blood, although there was also plenty of sweat and tears. There was a time, not so very long ago, when you walked into a bar and ordered a beer: that was about as complicated as it got. You would end up with a glass of something fizzy, light brown to pale gold in colour, its flavour notable for what it lacked rather than anything it delivered. It was a strange state of affairs, because New Zealanders have always loved beer. But that all changed in 1981 when Terry McCashin and his wife Bev cobbled together a ‘number eight wire brewery’ and Mac’s Brewery was born. The phenomenon we now know as the ‘craft brewing movement’ had begun. After two decades of hard work the McCashins sold the very successful Mac’s brand to one of their competitors, and the story could have ended there. But Bev and Terry’s children recently launched the latest incarnation of the McCashin family business, Stoke Brewery. This, then, is the story of the New Zealand brewing revolution sparked by Terry McCashin. Along the way, New Zealand — politics, society, the way New Zealanders do business, the place of former icons such as rugby and beer — everything changed profoundly over this period. The story of the McCashin family’s business is also the story of so many of the small business owners that make up this country, and it’s the story of the great Kiwi entrepreneurial spirit.

In 1993, Tony Magee, who had foundered at every job he'd ever had, decided to become the founder of a brewery. So You Want to Start a Brewery? is the thrilling first-person account of his gut-wrenching challenges and unexpected successes. Based in Petaluma, California, the Lagunitas Brewing Company makes craft beer that is simple and flavorful and defies categorization. The same could be said for this book. Equal parts memoir, narrative, and business story—with liberal dashes of pop culture and local color—this honest yet hilarious account of a one-of-a-kind, made-in-America journey just happens to culminate with the success of one of the nation's most popular craft beer brands. In twenty years, Lagunitas has grown from a shoestring operation to be the fifth largest—and the fastest growing—craft brewer in the United States. First published in a limited edition two years ago by a tiny California press, So You Want to Start a Brewery? has here been revised and updated to include Lagunitas's establishment of a new brewery in Chicago, set to open in 2014. So You Want to Start a Brewery? is unglamorous and full of entertaining digressions, but it's never afraid to mess with the nuts and bolts. This is a must-read for all who have considered starting their own business—or have sweated blood working to get one on its feet. Told in the vibrant voice of Tony Magee—the man closest to the process—this blow-by-blow chronicle will introduce beer drinkers and entrepreneurs to the reality of starting a craft brewery from the ground up.

The sweeping illustrated story of America’s oldest and most iconic craft brewery, featuring a history of American brewing traditions and homebrew recipes for Anchor’s top brews including Anchor Steam and California Lager “A tale of worldly curiosity, brilliance, persistence, and a thirst to succeed . . . If you ever wondered why beer drinkers get passionate about good beer, read this book.”—Charlie Papazian, author of The Complete Joy of Homebrewing San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Co. is one of America’s oldest breweries, with an extraordinary heritage rooted in the California Gold Rush. Undaunted and resilient, it has survived earthquakes, fires, insolvency, and Prohibition. In 1965, when mass-produced, mass-marketed beer completely dominated the American brewing landscape, Fritz Maytag rescued the nation’s smallest brewery and its unique Anchor Steam Beer from the brink of bankruptcy. Focusing on tradition, quality, and flavor, Maytag transformed Anchor Brewing, igniting a revolution that paved the way for today’s craft beer movement. Anchor brewery historian David Burkhart tells the story of America’s first craft brewery in this compellingly definitive insider’s guide. With three hundred images—most shown for the first time—and original homebrew recipes for four of Anchor’s iconic brews (Anchor Steam, Anchor California Lager, Anchor Porter, and Liberty Ale), The Anchor Brewing Story is a book for beer drinkers, homebrewers, pro brewers, entrepreneurs, San Francisco–philes, and anyone who loves a good comeback tale.
