This book brings together researchers from across the globe to share their work on the micro-analyses of storytelling. This book is particularly timely in light of continuing international efforts to integrate Asia literacy into a national educational system where understanding of Asia – its languages, cultures, histories, and beliefs – is still at an emergent stage for a nation that is evolving into what George Megalogenis refers as ‘an Eurasian society’ (2015). This paper reflects on a 2013-2014 Australia-China Council project in which school students in Australia and China produced and shared digital stories about their everyday lives and local cultures, with students being invited to give feedback on the language and content of the stories produced by their overseas peers. The main lessons learned during the project involved the need to seek common ground between the expectations of the Chinese and Australian partners. These pertained to five main categories: motivation, educational culture, organisation, technology, and pedagogy. Despite the challenges, students engaged in some valuable language and cultural learning, teachers developed some insights into the learning possibilities at the intersection of pedagogy and technology, and the researchers are beginning to develop a list of key recommendations to consider when setting up such cross-cultural, technology-supported projects. How can we tell our stories differently? How can we go beyond the academic article or sustainability report? All reports and all scholarly pieces are narratives of a sort, each choosing which evidence suits and each having some sense of beginning, middle and end.Through their use of fiction, art and poetry the seven papers in this Special Issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship are challenging what might typically be expected as the form of an academic article. These challenges include identifying silent voices, linking of our hands, hearts and heads via art, a poem, a napkin to communicate, the life of an average academic, stories of gladiatorial combat for promotion, and a man’s day in a non-specific future. This mix of challenge in both form and message contributes to the ability of the papers to advance understanding, and reinforces how an innovative approach to conveying the message can advance debate.
