Excerpt from Stover at Yale Dink Stover, freshman, chose his seat in the afternoon express that would soon be rushing him to New Haven and his first glimpse of Yale University. He leisurely divested himself of his trim overcoat, folding it in exact creases and laying it gingerly across the back of his seat; stowed his traveling-bag; smoothed his hair with a masked movement of his gloved hand; pulled down a buckskin vest, opening the lower button; removed his gloves and folded them in his breast pocket, while with the same gesture a careful forefinger, unperceived, assured itself that his lilac silk necktie was in snug contact with the high collar whose points, painfully but in perfect style, attacked his chin. Then, settling, not flopping, down, he completed his preparations for the journey by raising the sharp crease of the trousers one inch over each knee - a legendary precaution which in youth is believed to prevent vulgar bagging. Each movement was executed without haste or embarrassment, but leisurely, with the deliberate savoir-faire of the complete man of the world he had become at the terrific age of eighteen. In front of him spasmodic freshmen arrived, struggling from their overcoats in embarrassed plunges that threatened to leave them publicly in their shirt sleeves. Toward the close of a pleasant September afternoon, in one of the years when the big stick of President Roosevelt was cudgeling the shoulders of malefactors of great wealth, the feverish home-bound masses which poured into upper Fifth Avenue with the awakening of the electric night were greeted by the strangest of all spectacles which can astound a metropolitan crowd harassed by the din of sounds, the fret and fury of the daily struggle which is the tyranny of New York. A very young man, of clean-cut limbs and boyish countenance, absolutely unhurried amidst the press, without a trace of preoccupation, worry, or painful mental concentration, was swinging easily up the Avenue as though he were striding among green fields, head up, shoulders squared like a grenadier, without a care in the world, so visibly delighted at the novelty of gay crowds, of towering buildings decked in electric garlands, of theatric shop-windows, that more than one perceiving this open enthusiasm smiled with a tolerant amusement. Tom Beauchamp Crocker, familiarly known as Bojo, had sent his baggage ahead, eager to enjoy the delights one en-joys at twenty-four, which the long apprenticeship of school and college is ended and the city is waiting with all the mys-tery of that uncharted dominion—The World. He went his way with long, swinging steps, smiling from the pure delight of being alive, amazed at everything: at the tangled stream of nations flowing past him; at the prodigious number of entrancing eyes which glanced at him from under provoking brims; at the sheer flights of blazing windows, shutting out the feeble stars; at the vigor and vitality on the sidewalks; at the flooded lights from sparkling shop windows; at the roll-ing procession of incalculable wealth on the Avenue. Everywhere was the stir of returning crowds, the end of the summer's hot isolation, the reopening of gilded theaters, the thronging of hotels, and the displays of radiant shop fronts, preparing for the winter's campaign. In the crush of the Avenue was the note of home-coming, in taxicabs and coupés piled high with luggage and brown-faced children hanging at the windows, acclaiming familiar landmarks with piping cries. Tradesmen and all the world of little business, all the world that must prepare to feed, clothe, and amuse the winter metropolis, were pouring in.

Excerpt from Sexennial Record of the Class of 1904, Yale College It is With no little hesitation that I attempt to write What has here been called a preface, because an introduction seems to me somewhat out of place in a book, the purpose and character of Which are already known to all of you and the contents of Which are substantially your work - my duty having been but to record and arrange such data as you have sent to me. I Will, however, appreciate your attention to a few general words about the work of the Class Secretary before you pass on to a record of achievements by members of our Class, Which I sincerely trust will prove as interesting and inspiring to you as they have to me. You Will remember that I was elected to the office of Class Secretary nearly three years ago, and I must confess that at that time I accepted the position With considerable feeling of doubt as to the pleasantness of the duties Which it demanded, and I remained in that state of mind until many letters of encouragement and support received in reply to my first appeal for infor mation removed any such feeling on my part and have more than repaid me in many ways for any time and thought that I have given in preparing this Record. It is true that a few men have never responded to any letters sent to them. Several others of the Class delayed their replies until they had been appealed to three and four times. If I have any criticisms to make it is of those men on Whose account the work has at times dragged and been made somewhat dis couraging. Of course, it is but thoughtlessness, but I Will feel that I have done much if those Who have been delinquent in the past Will from now on realize that the work of the Secretary is not one of short hours; that his success, Whoever he may be, is measured by the completeness of his Records.
