Excerpt from Strange Roads But this is, after all, the new castle, although it is seven centuries old. If you take the way to the left, you appear to go inland and away from the sea. A short lane brings you up to a high, windswept place, whence the blue sea is to be seen far away towards Tenby, but nowhere before you. And then you go down into a gentle valley, and here the road becomes a field track. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Diverging Roads The tale of Californias early days is an epic, an immortal song of daring, of hope, of the urge of youth to unknown trails, of struggle, and of heartbreak. Across the great American plains the adventurers came, scrawling the story of their passing in lines of blood; they came around the Horn in wind-jammers, beating their way north ward in the strange Pacific; they forced their way into the wilderness, awakening California's hills from centuries-long sleep, and 'they pitched their tents and built their cabins by thousands in Chero kee Valley. Excerpt from A Strange Elopement All my baggage had been put aboard in the London Docks, and so when I met with a steward, there was no more for him to convey to my berth than a small portmanteau and one or two bundles. He was one of the under stewards, a young flat-faced man in a camlet jacket and a strawberry mark on his cheek. I gave him my name, - Captain Swift, - and he at once seemed to know where my berth was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Strange Family Possibly it may be so still, but it is a long time now Since I went along that road - once so familiar that it seemed almost a part of myself. Sometimes I feel that I should like to know whether the trees have Sprung up and hidden the old house that sheltered me for the first eighteen years of my life, and whether the forge still stands there, blackened with smoke and rather solitary, on your right hand just after you pass the trim stone wall that fences in the churchyard. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe Written several years earlier. This 18 interesting in many ways. It contains a fairly able dissertation on the principles 'of trade; in its suggestions for an academy to govern the English tongue, for the improvement of roads, for the institution of an acad emy for the higher education of women, and the like, it not only manifests the spirit of the age for organisation and reform, but frequently shows itself in advance of the age; and most important of all, in the concrete illustrations drawn from homely life, with which Defoe makes his theoretical discussion interesting, the essay shows the power, indispensable to a realistic story-teller, of depicting scenes vividly.
