Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: very good, Maastricht University (Business Administration), course: European Business Startegy, language: English, abstract: How many retailers would one expect to be in the top ten of the global fortune 500? There is one, and it has a firm second position, leaving behind mammoth companies such as Ford and General Motors (www.fortune500.com). Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer with 195 billion dollars in revenue in the year 2000, with operations mainly concentrated in the United States. Renowned in the United States for their discount centres, they have diversified into wholesaling to sustain the explosive growth of the seventies and eighties. Making use of acquired knowledge in distribution and inventory management technology, these new formulas proved to be profitable as well. However, the United States of America were not big enough to satisfy the needs of such a giant company, and international expansion was inevitable. After entry in South-America and Asia, Europe is the next market to be penetrated by Wal-Mart. The time seems right, as extensive liberalization has opened up the European Union and far-reaching economic integration between member states have created a huge common market, offering scale economies in purchasing and distribution similar to U.S. operations. Wal-Mart can use experience from previous foreign expansions to implement the correct strategy for Europe. This paper analyses Wal-Mart’s European strategy, the rational behind its move to Europe and implications for its European competitors. It explains the following problem statement: Wal-Mart’s entry into the European market was a strategic move rather than the pursuit of a growth opportunity. A brief review of Wal-Mart’s history will be followed by the factors explaining their success in the United States, coming together in a concept called “strategic fit”. After a short summary of their foreign expansion into South-America to stress the importance of the transferability of the concept of strategic fit, a description of the European retail industry will be given. Then the European retail industry is analysed with the help of the generic five forces model from Porter. The paper ends with a conclusion hinting at the future of the European retail market.

Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: A, Kenyatta University, course: International Marketing, language: English, abstract: Singapore is the most developed economy in the Southeast Asia region with a GDP per capita of more than $90000. The country has a well developed retail sector buoyed with strong consumer base, high disposable incomes, high literacy rates and its strategic location. This presented a review of macro environment, competitive and SWOT analyses of the Singapore’s retail industry to determine how Walmart Inc can successful enter the market. The review found that the strength of Singapore lies on its favorable business laws and regulations, business-friendly tax rates and high disposable incomes among Singaporeans. Singapore is also highly developed in terms of physical infrastructure and serves as one of the busiest air traffic and sea port hubs in the world. The high disposable income and economic freedom makes it hugely attractive for retail business like Walmart. Stable political climate and socio-cultural diversity also attracts new businesses to the country. However, the study found that corona virus pandemic and high labour and rental costs posed the biggest threats to Singapore retail industry. Nonetheless, the paper suggests adoption of franchising market entry strategy as the most appropriate. Franchising is the most appropriate approach due to low costs and reduced risks of failure. To be successful, the retailer must select a franchisee of good reputation and with a shared vision. Lastly, Walmart can select a franchisee and prepare to enter Singapore market after country opens up for business in the aftermath of the current pandemic.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 73%, Kings College London, language: English, abstract: Wal-Mart has been extremely successful as a retailer and distributor; this can be seen when looking at its global sales. The determinants of this success are manifold and relate to its strategic decisions regarding the ways in which it competes. In analysing the company's strategies the effects that suppliers, competition and consumers have on it, and the effect that Wal-Mart has on them, need to be taken into consideration. The primary economic concepts that are used to explain Wal-Mart's growth and efficiency are economies of scale and scope, as well as factors related to entry and exit within the industry. Basker (2007) argues that Wal-Mart's success can be considered from two different perspectives. Firstly, by increasing its size Wal-Mart has been able to take advantage of economies of scale and therefore reduce costs. Secondly, by having lower costs Wal-Mart has been able to grow and take advantage of economies of scale. These two arguments are linked and enforce each other, since growth and efficiency are both a cause and a consequence of economies of scale. One initial reason for Wal-Mart's lower cost is traced back to superior inventory and distribution technology that increase efficiency since the company's stores operate within the retail chain rather than being individual stores. It can be argued that the cost structure of Wal-Mart determines it size, because its costs are reduced through growth; it is advantageous for Wal-Mart to continue doing so on the chain as well as the store level.

"Highly readable, incisive, precise, and even elegant." —San Francisco Chronicle "Insightful." —BusinessWeek Wal-Mart isn’t just the world’s biggest company, it is probably the world’s most written-about. But no book until this one has managed to penetrate its wall of silence or go beyond the usual polemics to analyze its actual effects on its customers, workers, and suppliers. Drawing on unprecedented interviews with former Wal-Mart executives and a wealth of staggering data (e.g., Americans spend $36 million an hour at Wal-Mart stores, and in 2004 its growth alone was bigger than the total revenue of 469 of the Fortune 500), The Wal-Mart Effect is an intimate look at a business that is dramatically reshaping our lives.
