This case study was conducted to provide a good understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to Egypt’s agricultural research and organizational development to draw lessons and develop supporting guidelines. This study aimed to enhance efforts exerted by Egypt’s NARS in the field of developmental research by formulating an integrated and coherent approach for research and dissemination of proven technologies and practices. Such approaches are expected to address key bottlenecks and provide the needed direction and means for sustainable improved implementation of AR4D. This can ultimately lead to enhancing and empowering the capacity of Egypt’s NARS to better inform and influence policies and facilitate institutional changes required in the agricultural sector. As part of the efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to support and strengthen NARS’ research impact and their links to extension service systems, the present assessment was carried out to establish a deeper insight into challenges and opportunities that are facing NARS in Egypt.

The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors are the cornerstone of industries that produce food, fiber, and biofuel. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research in order to improve worker safety and health in these sectors. This National Research Council book reviews the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program to evaluate the 1) relevance of its work to improvements in occupational safety and health and 2) the impact of research in reducing workplace illnesses and injuries. The assessment reveals that the program has made meaningful contributions to improving worker safety and health in these fields. To enhance the relevance and impact of its work and fulfill its mission, the NIOSH Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Program should provide national leadership, coordination of research, and activities to transfer findings, technologies, and information into practice. The program will also benefit from establishing strategic goals and implementing a comprehensive surveillance system in order to better identify and track worker populations at risk.

This study—which includes a pilot intervention in Kenya—aims to further the state of knowledge about the emerging trend of disruptive agricultural technologies (DATs) in Africa, with a focus on supply-side dynamics. The first part of the study is a stocktaking analysis to assess the number, scope, trend, and characteristics of scalable disruptive technology innovators in agriculture in Africa. From a database of 434 existing DAT operations, the analysis identified 194 as scalable. The second part of the study is a comparative case study of Africa’s two most successful DAT ecosystems in Kenya and Nigeria, which together account for half of Sub-Saharan Africa’s active DATs. The objective of these two case studies is to understand the successes, challenges, and opportunities faced by each country in fostering a conducive innovation ecosystem for scaling up DATs. The case study analysis focuses on six dimensions of the innovation ecosystem in Kenya and Nigeria: finance, regulatory environment, culture, density, human capital, and infrastructure. The third part of the study is based on the interactions and learnings from a pilot event to boost the innovation ecosystem in Kenya. The Disruptive Agricultural Technology Innovation Knowledge and Challenge Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, brought together more than 300 key stakeholders from large technology companies, agribusiness companies, and public agencies; government representatives and experts from research and academic institutions; and representatives from financial institutions, foundations, donors, and venture capitalists. Scaling Up Disruptive Agricultural Technologies in Africa concludes by establishing that DATs are demonstrating early indications of a positive impact in addressing food system constraints. It offers potential entry points and policy recommendations to facilitate the broader adoption of DATs and improve the overall food system.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2021 im Fachbereich Agrarwissenschaften, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The objective of this paper is, firstly, to emphasize the relevance of data and the impact of applying an appropriate corporate data strategy. Secondly, to raise awareness for the intellectualization of productive industries (e.g. agriculture) in order to become more effective. Both objectives are partly covered in the introduction chapter and will be further illuminated in the course of the paper by elaborating on the theoretical background. The aspects Data Strategy and Intelligent Agriculture have received much attention in the past decade. Consequently, they became a central issue in numerous research papers. Previous work has only focused on one of the subjects at a time and therefore failed to analyze their interplay. Few researchers have addressed both topics simultaneously. This paper seeks to address how both subjects influence and depend on each other. Thirdly, the derivation of concrete guidelines for companies how data strategy and the development of intelligence must be synchronized. Using best practices based on the analysis of the agriculture industry, recommendations will be formulated. The ability to manage data wisely is becoming increasingly important for businesses both today and in the future, and it is therefore a decisive key competence for their success. One central question is to be discussed by this paper: When implementing a data strategy, should an agricultural company develop and continuously adapt the strategy to changing requirements to remain competitive in fast-moving markets? To answer this question, we look at a company that has successfully made the transition from a traditional agricultural business to a cloud service provider: Top Cloud-Agri Technology Co., Ltd. (TPYN). This methodology ensures proximity to practical application, which in turn facilitates the development of practice-oriented use cases. Later, business recommen
