Nowadays, stakeholders of agrifood value chains are developing specific strategies, regarding their sustainable transformations, supported by digital technologies. These strategies are designing new activities within and outside the whole value chains and in each of their specific segments, such as raw products, supplies and machinery, production, transformation, transportation and logistics, distribution, retail and consumption. The strategies developed by agrifood stakeholders, related to the digitalization for more sustainability of their practices and activities, are changing the way stakeholders are interacting and fuel, in one way or another, new reconfigurations of value chains. Most often, sustainability initiatives explore new value-added activities, goods, and services, while digital initiatives acknowledge the opportunities resulting from the use of digital solutions, such as sensors, the Internet of Things, e-commerce platforms, blockchain, or robots, and advanced data analytics based on big data, cloud computing technologies or artificial intelligence applications. Digital and sustainable transformations have been explored in the literature, for some time now, by considering either the changes involved in farms, companies, and business activities or the necessary adjustments of the economic and regulatory environments. However, the setting up of strategies related to the digitalization for sustainable agrifood value chains has not often been investigated.

The digital agriculture revolution holds a promise to build an agriculture and food system that is efficient, environmentally sustainable, and equitable, one that can help deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. Unlike past technological revolutions in agriculture, which began on farms, the current revolution is being sparked at multiple points along the agrifood value chain. The change is driven by the ability to collect, use, and analyze massive amounts of machine-readable data about practically every aspect of the value chain, and by the emergence of digital platforms disrupting existing business models. All this allows for drastically reduced transaction costs and pervasive information asymmetries that plague the agrifood system. The success of the digital transformation, however, is not guaranteed as the risks it brings are numerous, including those related to data governance and inadequate competition within and between digital platforms. What’s Cooking: Digital Transformation of the Agrifood System investigates how digital technologies can accelerate the transformation of the agrifood system by increasing efficiency on the farm; improving farmers’ access to output, input, and financial markets; strengthening quality control and traceability; and improving the design and delivery of agriculture policies. It also identifies a key role for the public sector in maximizing the benefits of this process while minimizing its risks, through enabling an innovation ecosystem featuring open datasets, digital platforms, digital entrepreneurship, digital payment systems, and digital skills and encouraging equitable technology adoption.

Kenya’s agrifood systems are broad and diverse, including both staple food crops and high-value exports which are essential to the economic and social advancement of the nation. The agricultural sector em ploys more than 40 percent of Kenya's workforce, including more than 70 percent of rural residents, and accounts for about 33 percent of the country's GDP (FAO, 2023a; FAO, n.d.). The growth of Kenya’s agrifood system is largely driven by domestic market demand rather than exports, a trend driven by rapid urbanization and rising income opportunities in the rural nonfarm sector, which are leading to shifts in dietary preferences and are expected to further influence ongoing structural transformation (Diao et al., 2023). Kenya’s agricultural sector is characterized by several value chains that significantly support economic output, job creation, and trade. Tea is Kenya's most significant agricultural export, contributing about 2 percent to the overall GDP and 4 percent to GDP in agriculture. Managed predominantly by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), which oversees over 60 percent of national tea production, the sector supports approximately 6.5 million people (Tea Board of Kenya, 2024). Tea also contributes around 21 percent of Kenya's export earnings, which makes it the third-largest source of foreign exchange earnings in the nation after diaspora remittances and tourism (Kilimo News, 2024).

Currently, the main operations of companies are either directly or indirectly interconnected in a global-world context. Competition has drifted from an individual to a supply chain basis, where digitalization plays a key role. Companies with better digital capabilities achieve sustainable competitive market advantages. In this context, companies must identify their current position in terms of digital capabilities, link these capabilities to supply chain performance, define their future desired competitive position and how their digital capabilities are going to help them to get there, and forecast their future desired performance not only at the individual company but also at the supply chain level. Increasing Supply Chain Performance in Digital Society considers innovative approaches to measure, manage, and project towards the future of the digital capabilities of both individual companies and supply chains. It also examines the relations these have with performance being a practical tool to identify not only where they are today in terms of digital capabilities but also where they should be long term and the resources needed to get them there. Covering a range of topics such as artificial intelligence and risk management, this reference work is ideal for practitioners, researchers, scholars, business owners, industry professionals, academicians, instructors, and students.
