The Internet has ushered in a new era in the economies of networking. With the increasing need for optimization based on these network economies, the IT-based e-business has become a platform for study as well as daily practice. In a similar vein, global warming has raised many issues which come into conflict with traditional research and policies. The Internet revolution has also shifted our society from a government- and company-led economy to a ‘netizen’- and consumer-led business world. This book enlightens us on why a harmonized participation of traditional network members or interested groups is necessary and how we can create values from diverse fields of interests and objectives, including the corporate social responsibility (CSR) and eco-friendly productivity. Digital Business and Sustainable Development integrates the platforms from these two fields of study based on the comparative analysis of Asian and other developing countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic detonated a “digital big bang” that spurred people, governments, and businesses to become “digital by default;” a sea change that generated vast digital dividends. These benefits that have not been distributed equally, however. New development gaps have emerged as digital transformation reinforces a vicious cycle of socioeconomic inequalities, within and across countries. The Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report 2022: Shaping our digital future report highlights that bridging digital divide and ensuring that advances in technology can benefit everyone will be a key challenge as the Asia-Pacific region seeks to achieve a more inclusive and sustainable post-pandemic recovery. The report highlighted that digital connectivity infrastructure is a critical “meta-infrastructure” for sustainable development. Three recommended pathways for action, which are not mutually exclusive and are aligned with the ESCAP Action Plan of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway initiative for 2022-2026.

This book aims to give policy makers an overview of the evolution of science, technology and innovation (STI) policies in a selected number of East Asian countries. China, Japan, Republic of Korea and Singapore have transformed their economies and societies in recent decades. From STI policies that enabled catch-up growth, these countries have evolved towards policies that are more aligned with sustainable development through integrating social, economic and environmental dimensions into their STI policies. The forthcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution is also reshaping STI policies in these countries as governments prepare to support the development of frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, as well as respond to the impacts of these technologies on their societies and economies. Governments are also evolving themselves as the public sector opens up to integrating innovations from civil society and the private sector and further strengthen the innovation capacity of the public sector to improve policy making processes and deliver services to their constituents. All three themes are explored in this book in separate chapters, through a comparative analysis of the STI policies of China, Japan, Republic of Korea and Singapore. The experiences of these countries can serve as useful references for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond that are interested in utilizing national level STI policies to achieve sustainable development, particularly in the context of the emergence of frontier technologies.

Digital technologies are revolutionizing the landscape of international trade and investment. As digital trade gains momentum, disparities in readiness are accentuating pre-existing inequalities. Countries and communities that are ill-prepared to seize these opportunities risk losing out on fundamental drivers of contemporary economic growth, societal development, and environmental conservation. Trade and investment authorities are grappling with a pressing challenge: - How can digital trade and investment policies be crafted to simultaneously drive growth and cater to societal and environmental imperatives? This core inquiry is the focus of the Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report, "Unleashing Digital Trade and Investment for Sustainable Development." The report, jointly prepared by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), delves into both the potential and obstacles associated with digital trade and investment. This report weaves together an integrative policy-making approach, particularly enlightening policymakers in trade and investment about the roles they can assume to realize the potential of digital trade and investment as effective means for the achievement of the SDGs. The report seeks to broaden policymakers' perspectives and is expected to stimulate policy dialogues and inter-ministerial and public-private sector collaboration. It advocates for a cohesive strategy at both the global and regional levels to reap greater benefits from digital trade and investment and as well as to maintain focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
