Asian American Christian churches have been serving Asian immigrants not only as their spiritual home providing nurture, comfort and uplifting of spirituality during their times of adjustment but also as a generative womb leading the alienated immigrants toward a meaningful integration into the larger society. The articles included here attempt to provide theoretical and theological foundations for understanding the Asian American predicament, and explore psychosocial experiences individually and collectively. Also included are articles, which relate theological and biblical insights to the unique experiences of the Asian American faith communities with the hope to reconstruct a better future.

How do religions spread in today’s world, where Christian missions have lost influence and modern nations have replaced colonial empires? Religion on the Move! is a collection of essays charting new religious expansions. Contemporary evangelists may be Nigerian, Korean, Brazilian or Congolese, working at the grassroots and outside the mainstream in Pentecostal, reformist Islamic, and Hindu spiritual currents. While transportation and media provide newfound mobility, the mission field may be next door, in Europe, North America, and within the "South," where migrants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America settle. These essays, using perspectives from religious studies, ethnography, history and sociology, show that immigrants, women, and other disempowered peoples transmit their faiths from everywhere to everywhere, engaging in globalization from below. The Spirit Moves West written by Rebecca Y. Kim and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-02 with Religion categories.

With the extraordinary growth of Christianity in the global south has come the rise of "reverse missions," in which countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America send missionaries to re-evangelize the West. In The Spirit Moves West, Rebecca Kim uses South Korea as a case study of how non-Western missionaries target Americans, particularly white Americans. She draws on four years of interviews, participant observation, and surveys of South Korea's largest non-denominational missionary-sending agency, University Bible Fellowship, in order to provide an inside look at this growing phenomenon. Known as the "Asian Protestant Superpower," South Korea is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it sends abroad: approximately 22,000 in over 160 countries. Conducting her research both in the US and in South Korea, Kim studies the motivations and methods of these Korean evangelicals who have, since the 1970s, sought to "bring the gospel back" to America. By offering the first empirically-grounded examination of this much-discussed phenomenon, Kim explores what non-Western missions will mean to the future of Christianity in America and around the world.

The Causes Symptoms And Management Of Burnout Among Youth Workers In Korean Immigrant Churches In California written by Youngjun Kim and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Burn out (Psychology) categories.

Many Korean youth workers in the U.S. have experienced ministerial stress and burnout. As a result of a failure to address it properly, these Korean youth workers have tended to leave their churches or change their careers. However, few studies have been done on burnout among Korean youth workers. This study aimed to uncover the factors that contribute to burnout among youth workers in Korean immigrant churches in California. The results of this study could play a vital role in helping youth workers reduce their sense of burnout. -- To fulfill the purpose of this study, this researcher conducted an in-depth interview with current or former Korean (American) youth workers living in California as one of the qualitative research methods, and grounded theory was used as a qualitative methodology. This document was composed of six chapters. Chapter One includes a brief description of this study. Chapter Two discusses theoretical and empirical literature on burnout, youth workers, and the Korean-American church context. Chapter Three explains how burnout could be understood in relation to social science perspectives. -- Chapter Four explains a research design, including the procedures of data collection and analysis. This research used grounded theory as a methodology for exploratory research. The participants in this study were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. The participants were composed of current and former youth workers who have served at Korean immigrant churches in California. Of the twenty participants (N=20), one is female, and the others are males. Five were full-time youth workers, and 15 were part-time youth workers. To collect data, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews, including face-to-face and on-line interviews. The researcher summarized all the conversations and transcribed them verbatim in Korean and English. Then, the researcher analyzed the data through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding by using NVivo 11 as a qualitative research software. -- Chapter Five discusses the findings of this study that includes the key theme, referring to contributors to burnout. Major subthemes under this key theme include (1) conflict with church leaders, (2) a hierarchical leadership structure of Korean immigrant churches, (3) a dissociation between Korean ministry staff and English ministry staff, (4) inadequate financial compensation, (5) a lack of guidance and mentorship, (6) overly heavy workloads, (7) spiritual dryness, (8) an unhealthy relationship with God, and (9) family issues. Another key theme was the symptoms of burnout; its subtheme included emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment. One of the key themes was an impact of burnout in negative and positive ways. The other key theme was the resolution of burnout. The major subtheme of this key theme was support from peers and fellow workers. -- Based on the findings of this study, Chapter Six discusses conclusions, hypotheses, and implications for helping youth workers to thrive in their ministry. Regarding the implications, Korean immigrant churches can help their youth workers address stress and burnout by providing reasonable financial compensations and explicit job descriptions. The churches can pursue horizontal ministry leadership styles and try to promote a collaborative relationship between Korean and English ministry staff. Also, Korean youth workers need to be dedicated to personal devotions and take a regular sabbatical rest.

In this timely book, Cho provides mission scholars, sending churches, and mission agencies with an understanding of Korean missionaries' burnout recovery process. Her study of Korean missionary burnout recovery included thirty-nine research participants who had experienced burnout in missionary service and who subsequently recovered. Participants reported a variety of physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms, as well as relational difficulties experienced during burnout. Cho describes how their self-help approach, characterized by independent, religious self-effort, brought only temporary relief. Through self-care, however, they experienced genuine recovery. Self-care that leads to lasting recovery is holistic and grace-based, characterized by a correct understanding of the roles of God and others in their lives and engagement in authentic community for interdependent care. This study also gives insightful recommendations to missionary member care systems, mission agencies, and other sending organizations in an Asian cultural context about how to care for Korean missionaries. It is also intended for counselors of home churches so that they can provide better member care for burned-out missionaries. Lastly, this study advances research into contextually appropriate paradigms and strategies helpful to cross-cultural missionaries in the area of both Korean missionaries and non-Western studies in missionary member care.
