The making of a string instrument called a Bandura, played a significant role in the documentation of my grandmother's immigration (at the tender age of 14) and her settlement in Canada. From my memories as well as those shared with by my uncle, her son, the story begins, taking you the reader on that same journey across the ocean, weaving through past and present life events of my grandmother and me the writer. Hopefully, after reading this story, you too will be inspired to document your ancestral stories as well, to leave as a legacy for future generations. For, we must always remember the gifts our multicultural ancestor's left us, in their assimilation to the new world. Reviews Book Review Iryna Konstantiuk "Excellent work, an unforgettable story! The story as told, is a refreshing presentation of a pioneer immigrantÕs adaptation and survival in Canada. This historical account of events, reminds one of where we've come from, and what it means to belong to this nation. It is a must read for every Canadian, particularly each successive generation of youth. I would recommend that this book be part of mandatory reading within our Canadian school curriculum!" In "The String of Pearls," James Malcolm Rymer weaves a thrilling narrative that unravels the gruesome tale of the infamous Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street. Set against the backdrop of Victorian London, this serialized Gothic horror novel integrates elements of suspense and melodrama, capturing the reader's imagination with its vivid descriptions and macabre themes. Rymer employs sharp dialogue and intricate plots, reflecting the era's fascination with crime and the grotesque. The book stands out not only as a harbinger of the horror genre but also as a piece of social commentary on the burgeoning issues of poverty, class disparity, and urban decay that characterized 19th-century England. James Malcolm Rymer, a contemporary of Charles Dickens, gained prominence in the realm of sensational literature. His experiences in a rapidly changing society imbued his writing with a keen awareness of urban struggles and moral dilemmas. Rymer's background in journalism and his engagement with the darker corners of Victorian life likely inspired him to create a character as complex and engaging as Sweeney Todd, whose life embodies the struggle between victimhood and villainy. Readers seeking a gripping and psychologically rich tale should delve into "The String of Pearls." Rymer's masterful storytelling and his exploration of the human psyche, combined with the atmospheric setting of London, offer an enthralling experience that resonates with themes of justice, revenge, and the consequences of societal neglect. This novel not only entertains but also provokes thought, making it an essential read for fans of horror and Gothic fiction.

In this fearful and cynical age, when doom-and-gloomers forecast catastrophe and fearmongers try to get us to hedge our bets on the future with insurance policies and safety nets, we need to rediscover real hope. Lewis Smedes says, "Hope is as native to our spirits as thinking is to our brain. Keep hoping, and you keep living. Stop hoping, and you start dying." He shows how hope powers every good thing we accomplish and helps us overcome every bad thing we encounter. He talks about how to keep hope alive in difficult times, discern false hope from true hope, and move beyond worry to trust in God.

What are the spiritual consequences of abuse and trauma? Where is God? How and why does such senseless suffering occur? What is the relationship between loss and hope? What are the benefits of examining loss and hope from an interreligious focus? These are some of the questions addressed in this volume, written by leading international scholars and which also includes contributions by those who have suffered: survivors of genocide and state terror. Case studies of loss and hope from around the world are discussed, including from the United States, Ireland, Sri Lanka, India, Iran, Iraq, Argentina, China, and Chile. Religions examined include Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism. Three interconnected lenses are used to explore new perspectives on loss and hope: survivors and victims' testimony; interfaith studies; and ethical approaches. The book highlights the need for responses to atrocity that transcend differences within gender, class, religion, race and ethnicity. The authors stress the need for partnership and dialogue from an interfaith perspective, and while neither hiding not unduly minimizing the extent of losses in the world, attempt to establish an ethics of hope in the face of destabilizing losses in the realms of human rights and post-conflict resolution. Loss and Hope is the first book to bring together this high level and diversity of scholars living and working all over the world from different faith, cultural and ethnic backgrounds examining the universal themes of loss and hope.
