This is a handbook of practical techniques for making the best possible interpretation of geological structures at the map scale and for extracting the maximum amount of information from surface and subsurface maps. Quantitative methods are emphasized throughout and analytical solutions are given. Interpretation strategies are defined for GIS or CAD users, yet are simple enough to be done by hand. This book will help users produce better geological maps, judge the quality of existing maps, and locate and fix mapping errors.

Manyimportant decisions, ranging from locating an oil prospect or a land-fill site to determining the location and sizeof an earthquake-producingfault,are based on geo logical maps. Because a map-scale structure is never completely sampled in three dimensions, geological maps and the cross sections derived from maps are always interpretations. The interpretation may be complicated by direct structural observati ons, likebedding attitudes, that are misleading because they represent a local structu re,not the map-scale structure. Some data may simply be wrong. The interpretation of the geometry of even a single horizon, therefore, alwaysinvolvesinferences about the validity and meaning of the observations themselves as wellas the nature of the geo metry between the observation points. How is an accurate interpretation to be con structed and how is it to be validated once complete? The objective of this book is to demonstrate the concepts and techniques required to obtain the most complete and accurate interpretation of the geometry ofstructures at the map scale. The methods are designedprimarilyforinterpretations based on out crop measurements and subsurface information of the type derived from welllogs and two-dimensional seismic reflection profiles. These forms of information all present a similar interpretive problem, which is to define the geometry from isolated and dis continuous observations. The underlying philosophy of interpretation is that structu res are three-dimensional solid bodies and that data from throughout the bodyshould be integrated into an internally consistent interpretation.

The book includes new material, in particular examples of 3-D models and techniques for using kinematic models to predict fault and ramp-anticline geometry. The book is geared toward the professional user concerned about the accuracy of an interpretation and the speed with which it can be obtained from incomplete data. Numerous analytical solutions are given that can be easily implemented with a pocket calculator or a spreadsheet.

This highly illustrated student guide introduces the skills of interpreting a geological map and relating it to the morphology of the most important types of geological structure. Thoroughly revised, and with more international examples, it is ideal for use by students with a minimum of tutorial supervision. Photographs of structures are set alongside their representations on maps. The maps used in exercises have been chosen to provide all of the realism of a survey map without the huge amount of data often present, so that students can develop skills without becoming overwhelmed or confused. In particular, emphasis is placed throughout on developing the skill of three-dimensional visualization so important to the geologist. * Successful practical guide provides a solid introduction to the subject of geological maps * Fully revised edition includes more international examples to increase the breadth of your knowledge * Illustrations and end of chapter questions make this an ideal tool to aid self-guided study

This edited book discusses various challenges in teaching structural geology and tectonics and how they have been overcome by eminent instructors, who employed effective and innovative means to do so. All of the chapters were written by prominent and active academics and geoscientists fully engaged in teaching Structural Geology and Tectonics. New instructors will find this book indispensible in framing their teaching strategy. Effective teaching of Structural Geology and Tectonics constitutes the backbone of geoscience education. Teaching takes place not only in classrooms, but also in labs and in the field. The content and teaching methodologies for these two fields have changed over time, shaped by the responsibilities that present-day geoscientists are expected to fulfill.

In the same way that topographic, road, and rail maps provide us with information concerning the nature of the land surface and the location of man-made features. Geological maps contain data which allows an understanding of the distribution of rocks that make up the crust of the Earth and the orientation of structures they contain. Unlike ordinary maps however, geological maps include information which allows us to assess not only the location of particular rocks and the areas they cover, but also their underground extent and their geological history.
