This book explores Intercultural communication; cross-cultural communication; social psychology; cross-cultural psychology and Chinese cultureIn the context of globalization, values, as one of the cultural cores, play a central role in people's daily communication. This book starts from a psycholexical approach to extract an indigenous Chinese values structure and then relates the locally derived values structure with the cross-culturally and empirically validated Schwartz's individual-level human value contents and structure. It intends to find the culture-specifics in the values structure of Chinese people and meanwhile examine Schwartz's universals in content and structure of human basic values in the context of transforming mainland Chinese society. The world needs to better understand Chinese people's behavior and Chinese culture at the increasing contact zones. Values are the central channel to know and understand Chinese societies, people and culture. This book offers such an opportunity for readers to know Chinese culture-specific and culture-general values through a series of empirical studies. This book is unique in that there is still no research found starting from a psycholexical approach to study Chinese values structure in the literature. It can be said that this book is the first attempt to explore the values structure of Chinese.

This work illustrates China’s values and how they are practiced. After introducing readers to the theories, systematical structure, historical status, and influence of traditional Chinese values, it points out major developmental trends in connection with modernization. Further, it explores the significance of the contemporary reconstruction of Chinese values and argues that these values can be divided into three layers: values-based goals of national development, Chinese values concepts, and norms of values in a civil society. On this basis, it subsequently interprets the core socialist values “Prosperity, Democracy, Civility and Harmony,” the value concepts “Freedom, Equality, Justice and Rule of Law” and values-based norms “Patriotism, Dedication, Integrity and Friendship.”

The editors are grateful to the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for its generous support of their research work which enabled them to publish the present book. The present book carefully maps the Chinese modernisation discourse, highlighting its relationship to other, similar discourses, and situating it within historical and theoretical contexts. In contrast to the majority of recent discussions of a “Chinese development model” that tend to focus more on institutional then cultural factors, and are more narrowly concerned with economic matters than overall social development, the book offers several important focal points for many presently overlooked issues and dilemmas. The multifaceted perspectives contained in this anthology are not limited to economic, social, and ecological issues, but also include political and social functions of ideologies and cultural conditioned values, representing the axial epistemological grounds of modern Chinese society. 2011 was the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. The centennial is relevant not only in terms of state ideology, but also plays a significant role within academic research into Chinese society and culture. This historic turning point likewise represents the symbolic and concrete linkages and tensions between tradition and modernity, progress and conservatism, traditional values and the demands for adjustment to contemporary societies. The book shows that Chinese transition from tradition to modernity cannot be understood in a framework of a unified general model of society, but rather through a more complex insight into the interrelations among elements of physical environment, social structure, philosophy, history, and culture.

This study compares the ever-changing cultural values of contemporary China and the contemporary United States. Surveying 2000-Shanghi area residents and villagers as well as 2500 US citizens, the authors examine to what extent there has been a loss of "traditional" values in the United States. The book looks at value systems in both cultures associated with family relationships, kinship ties, male-female relationships, and general interpersonal relationships - the fundamental social relationships comprising the social fabric of a society. The authors conclude that although both societies have experienced changes in this century, they have followed quite different paths. In exploring the extent to which this process has differed, the authors address the following questions: what traditional Confucian values persist in China after 40 years of communist indoctrination and the recent "invasion" of Western culture? How are fundamental human relationships viewed in the United States? How do these two societies differ today, both in adherence to traditional values and in the dynamics of value change? These and many more issues are explored.

The multi-level distribution of cultural elements has been demonstrated, the object of which can be refined as ICON. Culture is streamlined for ICON so as to enable it to be used in a creative way. With a cultural image mapping, ICON evokes the values of identity from the depths of feeling, making products endless charming. The proposition of "Cultural Composition" discovered the law how culture appears and changes in design. Hong Xiao examines the linkage between social structure and child-rearing values in the United States and China. Her primary objectives are to examine the underlying structure of childrearing values, discover the dynamics of the structural-level, family-level, and individual-level determinants of childrearing values, and to compare patterns of value orientations in the two countries. Three value dimensions--autonomy, conformity, and a care orientation--are identified in both the United States and China samples via factor analyses. Furthermore, despite cross-national differences in political system, economic development, and culture history, Professor Xiao finds Americans and Chinese are quite similar in their thinking of the kinds of things to teach children at home. Among the top six qualities endorsed within each country, five are identical. However, sources of value variations are drastically different in the two countries. For example, in the United States, while the influence of class on men's values for children has become muted overtime, class differences in values continue to exist among women. And neither gender nor motherhood is related to the care orientation. In China, valuation of children's autonomy or conformity is conditioned heavily by political conformity, age, and family size. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with gender and family studies, sociology, and Asian Studies.

This book focuses on Shenzhen, one of China’s most globalized metropolises, a leading centre of high-tech industries and, as a melting pot of migrants from all over China, a place of vibrant cultural creativity. While in the early stages of Shenzhen’s development this vibrant cultural creativity was associated with the resilience of traditional social structures in Shenzhen’s migrant ‘urban villages’, today these structures undergird dynamic entrepreneurship and urban self-organization throughout Shenzhen, and have gradually merged with the formal structures of urban governance and politics. This book examines these developments, showing how important traditional social structures and traditional Chinese culture have been for China’s economic modernization. The book goes on to draw out the implications of this for the future of Chinese culture and Chinese economic engagement in a globalized world.
