The presentation is descriptive and fairly elementary, requiring only some programming experience in a high-level language such as COBOL, FORTRAN or PASCAL. Topics covered include computer-based information systems, structured analysis, structured design, structured implementation, and contemporary issues in system development. The book contains many case studies.

The designer of a software system, like the architect of a building, needs to be aware of the construction techniques available and to choose the ones that are the most appropriate. This book provides the implementer of software systems with a guide to 25 different techniques for the complete development processes, from system definition through design and into production. The techniques are described against a common background of the traditional development path, its activities and deliverable items. In addition the concepts of metrics and indicators are introduced as tools for both technical and managerial monitoring and control of progress and quality. The book is intended to widen the mental toolkit of system developers and their managers, and will also introduce students of computer science to the practical side of software development. With its wide-ranging treatment of the techniques available and the practical guidance it offers, it will prove an important and valuable work.

Analyst Workbenches examines various aspects of analyst workbenches and the tasks and data that they should support. The major advances and state of the art in analyst workbenches are discussed. A comprehensive list of the available analyst workbenches, both the experimental and the commercial products, is provided. Comprised of three parts, this book begins by describing International Computers Ltd's approach to automating analysis and design. It then explains what business analysis really means, outlines the principal features of analyst workbenches, and considers the ways in which they can solve the problems. The following chapters focus on how the analyst can deal with performance issues and lay proper foundations for the later, more detailed, work of the designer; the use of artificial intelligence techniques in workbenches; and strategic information systems planning technology. Integrated Project Support Environments (IPSEs) and the workbench-related phenomenon of mapping are also discussed. The final chapter evaluates future prospects for workbench products. This monograph will be a valuable resource for systems analysts and designers.

Database Performance Tuning And Optimization written by Sitansu S. Mittra and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-18 with Computers categories.

Scope The book provides comprehensive coverage of database performance tuning and opti- zation using Oracle 8i as the RDBMS. The chapters contain both theoretical discussions dealing with principles and methodology as well as actual SQL scripts to implement the methodology. The book combines theory with practice so as to make it useful for DBAs and developers irrespective of whether they use Oracle 8i. Readers who do not use Oracle 8i can implement the principles via scripts of their own written for the particular RDBMS they use. I have tested each script for accuracy and have included the sample outputs generated from them. An operational database has three levels: conceptual, internal, and external. The c- ceptual level results from data modeling and logical database design. When it is imp- mented via an RDBMS such as Oracle, it is mapped onto the internal level. Database - jects of the conceptual level are associated with their physical counterparts in the internal level. An external level results from a query against the database and, as such, provides a window to the database. There are many external levels for a single conceptual level.
