Dit eerste nummer van jaargang 43 van Filosofie & Praktijk wordt geopend door Jürgen Habermas met zijn bijdrage “Gedachten en hypothesen over een nieuwe structurele verandering van de politieke publieke sfeer”. Deze publicatie, voor Filosofie & Praktijk vertaald door Leon Pijnenburg, verscheen onlangs in een speciaal themanummer van het tijdschrift Leviathan, waarin verschillende auteurs hun licht lieten schijnen op de nieuwe structurele veranderingen van de politieke openbaarheid. Daarmee is de ‘klassieker’ van Jürgen Habermas, Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit, (Neuwied 1962; Nederlandse vertaling: De structuurverandering van het publieke domein. Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Boom, 2015) opnieuw uitgangspunt voor discussie. In dit F&P-nummer niet de volledige discussie, maar wel de uitgebreide bijdrage van Habermas naar aanleiding van het boek waarvan hij laat weten dat het in termen van verkoop “hoewel het mijn eerste was, tot op heden mijn meest succesvolle gebleven” is, maar waarvan hij een veel belangrijker gevolg constateert, namelijk “binnen de sociale wetenschappen kreeg het politieke concept van de ‘publieke sfeer’ zo wel een plaats in een bredere sociaal-structurele context.” En dat geldt ook nog vandaag de dag. De volgende bijdrage aan dit nummer, “Op het spoor van natuurbeleving en cultuuroverdenking aan de hand van Ton Lemaire. Een overzicht” door Petran Kockelkoren, bevat de tekst van zijn rede ter gelegenheid van de uitreiking van de Kasteel Groeneveld Prijs in oktober 2021. Deze prijs wordt toegekend aan “een persoon of organisatie die zich uitzonderlijk heeft ingespannen voor de bewustwording van natuur en landschap voor huidige en toekomstige generaties”. En die persoon was Ton Lemaire. Na zijn bekende Filosofie van het Landschap publiceerde Uitgeverij Ambo nog een twintigtal boeken van Ton Lemaire, waarin telkens de verhouding van cultuur en natuur centraal staat. Petran Kockelkoren kijkt terug: “Al tijdens mijn studietijd aan de Faculteit Filosofie in Groningen in de jaren zeventig heb ik de vormende invloed ondervonden van zijn baanbrekende boeken. Deze hebben mij – en vele generatiegenoten met mij – op het spoor gezet van natuurbeleving en cultuuroverdenking. Daarna presenteert Dick Willems met zijn bijdrage “Zorg, technologie, ethiek: het goede blijven leren” een bewerking van zijn afscheidsrede als hoogleraar Medische Ethiek aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, gehouden op 24 september 2021. Hij beschrijf in zijn bewerkte rede wat de medische ethiek naar zijn idee in de afgelopen achttien jaar geleerd heeft. En daarbij neemt hij “geleerd” in de inderdaad dubbele betekenis van onderwezen en opgestoken. Hij bespreek achtereenvolgens de terreinen ‘ondersteuning’, ‘onderzoek’, en ‘onderwijs’, om aan het slot te concluderen: “We moeten ethiek blijven leren maar we moeten ook weer leren om idealen te bedenken, om te dromen.” In zijn “Minima Philosophica” gaat Ton Vink nader in op de gang van zaken rond het door de Coöperatie Laatste Wil gepropageerde natrium-azide als middel om tot zelfdoding over te gaan. Hoe zit het met de handel in dit middel en hoe gaan mensen eigenlijk dood als ze dit ‘Middel X’ gebruiken? We zijn inmiddels een aantal arrestaties, aangiftes en doden verder en de vraag wordt dan ook gesteld: moet er niet eens wat gebeuren? Het is mooi om een recht te claimen, maar gaat dat niet gepaard met de plicht om op verantwoorde wijze van zo’n recht gebruik te maken? In zijn bijdrage “Sterven en laten sterven” reageert Kees Hellingman vanuit humanistische hoek op de bijdragen aan het thema ‘voltooid leven’ in het laatste nummer van jaargang 42 van F&P. Hij geeft zijn beargumenteerde mening over euthanasie en hulp daarbij, en zet dat af tegen de argumentatie in de bijdragen van verschillende auteurs in het genoemde nummer van Filosofie & Praktijk: “Bovendien meen ik dat te vaak (altijd?) een element ontbreekt in de discussies over dit onderwerp: suïcide in de praktijk. Misschien komt dat omdat het wat makkelijker praten is over de zin van het leven, de beschermwaardigheid, of zelfs de heiligheid ervan, zonder het gitzwarte beeld van de suïcide in het achterhoofd. Daarom wil ik ook daarop ingaan.” De rubriek Signalementen vormt zoals gebruikelijk de afsluiting van F&P

Jürgen Habermas’s book The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, first published in 1962, has long been recognized as one of the most important works of twentieth-century social thought. Blending philosophy and social history, it offered an account of the public sphere as a domain that mediates between civil society and the state in which citizens could discuss matters of common concern and participate in democratic decision-making through the formation of public opinion. Now, in view of the digital revolution and the resulting crisis of democracy, he returns to this important topic. In this new book Habermas focuses on digital media, in particular social media, which are increasingly relegating traditional mass media to the background. While the new media initially promised to empower users, this promise is being undermined by their algorithm-steered platform structure that promotes self-enclosed informational ‘bubbles’ and discursive ‘echo chambers’ in which users split into a plurality of pseudo-publics that are largely closed off from one other. Habermas argues that, without appropriate regulation of digital media, this new structural transformation is in danger of hollowing out the institutions through which democracies can shape social and economic processes and address urgent collective problems, ranging from growing social inequality to the climate crisis.

If we are to believe what many sociologists are telling us, the public sphere is in a near terminal state. Our ability to build solidarities with strangers and to agree on the general significance of needs and problems seems to be collapsing. These cultural potentials appear endangered by a newly aggressive attempt to universalize and extend the norms of the market. For four decades Habermas has been trying to bring the claims of a modern public sphere before us. His vast oeuvre has investigated its historical, sociological and theoretical preconditions, has explored its relevance and meaning as well as diagnosing its on-going crises. In the contemporary climate, a systematic look at Habermas’ lifelong project of rescuing the modern public sphere seems an urgent task.
