Methodist Education In Peru written by Rosa del Carmen Bruno-Jofré and has been published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with History categories.

With research based on extensive primary sources, the author examines the activities of the Methodist mission in Peru, in particular its educational work, within the Peruvian socioeconomic formation and its ideological and intellectual changes. Yet her study goes beyond Methodist boundaries: Social Gospel doctrine and educational theory, which link American Progressivism (especially John Dewey’s pedagogical ideas) with Christianity, are also treated at an interdenominational level. The book contends that Methodist schools constituted an educational system of their own within a socioeconomic formation of uneven character, a society where an imperialist presence was interwoven with pre-capitalist as well as local incipient capitalist forms. The author’s analysis of the political dimension of missionary work—from the quest for religious freedom to the attempt to exert influence on social movements—leads her to consider the relationships among APRA leaders, the missionaries, and the interdenominational Committee on Cooperation in Latin America. Bruno-Jofré argues that Social Gospel doctrines, although couched in reformist language, were ultimately a vehicle of North American theology. This book presents a refreshingly wide perspective on the development of education in the Third World as affected by missionary bodies from the First World.

The Ways Of The People written by Alan R. Tippett and has been published by William Carey Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-19 with Religion categories.

Alan Tippett’s publications played a significant role in the development of missiology. The volumes in this series augment his distinguished reputation by bringing to light his many unpublished materials and hard-to-locate printed articles. These books— encompassing theology, anthropology, history, area studies, religion, and ethnohistory— broaden the contours of the discipline. Missionaries and anthropologists have a tenuous relationship. While often critical of missionaries, anthropologists are indebted to missionaries for linguistic and cultural data as well as hospitality and introductions into the local community. In The Ways of the People, Alan Tippett provides a critical history of missionary anthropology and brings together a superb reader of seminal anthropological contributions from missionaries Edwin Smith, R. H. Codrington, Lorimer Fison, Diedrich Westermann, Henri Junod, and many more. Twenty years as a missionary in Fiji, following pastoral ministry in Australia and graduate degrees in history and anthropology, provide the rich database that made Alan R. Tippett a leading missiologist of the twentieth century. Tippett served as Professor of Anthropology and Oceanic Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary.

In this book, the remarkable story of Raphael Thomas is brought to life in the historical contexts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Thomas was trained in theology and medicine in the finest schools in New England, but his one goal was to serve as a medical missionary in Asia. He served with two mission agencies, and with many unique and colorful characters from America and the Philippines. His sense of humor, and his sense of honor, are frequently seen here, as are the personal losses he experienced. He was convinced that medicine, education, and training should always be in service to evangelism and the establishment of churches. In his later years, “Raph” attempted to bring evangelicals in the Northern Baptist Convention together. Whether his convictions, his breath of vision, his tenacity, or his tenderness is in view, Raphael Thomas proves to be a man of God we ought to know.
