The fraught tension between science and religion has loomed large in scholarship about the nineteenth century in Spain, especially given the prominence of the Catholic Church and the discoveries made by Wallace and Darwin. The struggle for epistemological superiority between these two discourses (science and religion) has served to overshadow certain corners of the cultural landscape that, though prominent sites of intellectual exploration in their day, have received comparatively less scholarly attention until recently. Fringe Discourses brings together a group of essays that seeks to restore a sense of the epistemological richness of nineteenth-century Spain. By exploring the relationship between epistemology, modernity, and subjectivity, these essays recover significant efforts by Spanish authors and intellectuals to explain human nature and their world, which seemed to be changing so radically before their eyes. In doing so the essays also reveal just how elastic the relationship was between science and pseudoscience, genius and quackery. Offering a veritable Wunderkammer, the authors collected here train their sights both on curious fields of study (from pogonolgy, the science of beards, to Spiritualism) and curiouser people (from a government spy on undercover assignment in Morocco dressed as a Moorish prince to a hypnotic huckster who dupes the queen regent). With other authors focusing on science fiction dystopias, mystical journeys, and anatomical symbology, Fringe Discourses reveals the Spanish nineteenth century for the intellectual Wild West it was.

Possenti processi di urbanizzazione stanno modificando a un ritmo incalzante gli scenari sociali, culturali ed economici dell’Africa. Per favorire un ampio confronto interdisciplinare, il Centro Piemontese di Studi Africani (CSA) ha organizzato – in collaborazione con l’Associazione Studi Africani in Italia (ASAI), l’Università e il Politecnico di Torino – il convegno “L’Africa delle città. Economie, popolazioni, culture” (Torino, Palazzo del Rettorato, 16-17 ottobre 2015), che ha visto la partecipazione di più di cinquanta studiosi appartenenti a diverse discipline, distribuiti in una decina di panel tematici. Questo volume presenta contributi rielaborati a partire da tali iniziative, messi a disposizione del pubblico per alimentare il dibattito relativo alle dinamiche di cambiamento in atto nel continente africano. Terraferma affronta e decostruisce, mediante l'impiego critico e comparativo di un vasto armamentario di fonti documentarie, quelle narrazioni destorificanti che a partire dagli anni postunitari hanno investito la Basilicata a lungo descritta quale "terra ferma", immobile, priva di mutamento, dominata da uomini fatalisti e familisti, e tratteggia invece una Regione ancorata alla "terraferma", ad una terra stabile che non è spazio di destino e di attesa ma di compimento. Così facendo, il volume mostra il significato contingente e inevitabilmente mutevole delle stereotipizzazioni e delle stigmatizzazioni, vale a dire delle rappresentazioni identizzanti che di una specifica popolazione pretendono paradossalmente di poter cogliere finanche gli aspetti più intimi e profondi, sino a giungere al loro "DNA" culturale. "Terraferma", pertanto, si fa occasione per vedere da vicino - servendosi di una approfondita indagine storico-antropoligica, cristallizzatasi in topos identizzanti di lunga durata, piuttosto una terra che indica la tenacia dell'esserci, e che lascia cogliere meglio che altrove quei dispositivi culturali con i quali gli uomini costruiscono relazioni empatiche ed intime con i luoghi. Tutto ciò prima che quest'ultimi siano attraversati da processi di re-identizzazione, ovvero da dinamiche di ri-definizione del "noi", generate da stravolgimenti ecologici, politici e sociali.
