South Picene is the pre-Roman language spoken in the Adriatic sector of central Italy. This book presents a description of what we know about the structure of this language. South Picene is (together with Umbrian, Oscan, Latin, and Faliscan) one of the few members of the Italic branch of the Indo-European family and is also one of the European languages with the oldest existing texts (550 BCE). Besides a grammatical outline of the language, the book contains the linguistic (and often stylistic) analysis of all the 21 inscriptions that compose the South Picene epigraphic corpus and a word list. South Picene will be of interest to students and scholars of Indo-European languages, Italic languages, and in general, ancient languages of the Italian peninsula.

This volume provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Gothic, the earliest attested language of the Germanic family (apart from runic inscriptions), dating to the fourth century. The bulk of the extant Gothic corpus is a translation of the Bible, of which only a portion remains, and which has been the focus of most previous works. This book is the first in English to also draw on the recently discovered Bologna fragment and Crimean graffiti, original Gothic texts that provide more insights into the language. Despite the fact that they are often crucial to our understanding, the vague, ineffable elements of language use and communication have received much less attention from linguists than the more concrete, effable ones. This has left a range of important questions unanswered. How might we account for the communication of non-propositional phenomena such as moods, emotions and impressions? What type of cognitive response do these phenomena trigger, if not conceptual or propositional? Do creative metaphors and unknown words in second languages and other ‘pointers’ to ‘conceptual regions’ communicate concepts learned from language alone? This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyse them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis. Elinizde tutmakta olduğunuz bu kitap, Gazi Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Türk Dili Bilim Dalı doktora programı süresince, Prof. Dr. Hülya KASAPOĞLU ÇENGEL danışmanlığında hazırlanıp 2016 yılı Temmuz ayında savunulan “Codex Cumanicus ve Ermeni Harfli Kıpçak Türkçesinde Fiil Yapımı” isimli doktora tezinin revize edilip güçlendirilmiş biçimidir. Savunulduğu tarihten bu yana akademiye hizmet etmiş mezkûr tez, her bilimsel eserde olabildiği gibi, gerek yazıldığı dönemdeki zaman kısıtı ve buna bağlı stres gerekse dönemdeki yetkinlik seviyesine bağlı olarak hatalar içeriyordu. Bu hatalar daha ziyade yabancı kaynaklardan alınan verilerin anlamlarına ilişkin idi. Bu hatalar büyük oranda giderildi. Tezde benimsenen metoda göre fiil derlemi için başvurulan her kaynağın verisi o yayının dili ile teze alınmış ve her yabancı veri için Türkçe tercüme verilmişti. Bu yöntem açık olmakla beraber kullanım kolaylığı yaratmıyor, hacmi artırıyordu. Dolayısıyla bu kitapta bu yöntemden vazgeçilmiş, kullanılan veriler bir potada eritilerek her bir fiil verisi için belirli anlamlarda karar kılınmıştır. Bu noktada Ermeni Harfli Kıpçak Türkçesi verileri için Aleksandr Garkavets’in Kıpçakskiy Slovar’ (2010) sözlüğü belirleyici kaynak olmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra mezkûr tez için Codex Cumanicus i çin b irincil k aynak K aare G rønbech’in 1942 tarihli idi. 2015 yılında Prof. Dr. Mustafa ARGUNŞAH ve Doç. Dr. Galip GÜNER bu eser için yeni bir yayın çıkarmışlardı. Ancak tezde büyük aşama kaydedildiği için bu çalışmaya Codex Cumanicus fiil verileri için sadece tartışmalı noktalarda başvurulmuştu. Kitapta ise Grønbech verileri yerine 2015 yılında basılmış yayındaki veriler birincil olarak kullanılmıştır. Bu kitabın ve bu kitaba kaynaklık eden teze beni yönlendirmiş olan danışman hocam Prof. Dr. Hülya KASAPOĞ- LU ÇENGEL’e ve tezin yazım aşamasında bana destek olup katkı sağlayan herkese tekrar teşekkür ederim. Multiword expressions (MWEs) are a challenge for both the natural language applications and the linguistic theory because they often defy the application of the machinery developed for free combinations where the default is that the meaning of an utterance can be predicted from its structure. There is a rich body of primarily descriptive work on MWEs for many European languages but comparative work is little. The volume brings together MWE experts to explore the benefits of a multilingual perspective on MWEs. The ten contributions in this volume look at MWEs in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Maori, Modern Greek, Romanian, Serbian, and Spanish.
