Die Methodenreflexion der 70er Jahre hat das exegetische Instrumentarium durch Aufnahme literaturwissenschaftlicher Gesichtspunkte verfeinert. Es scheint darum geboten, die Ergebnisse der form- und gattungskritischen Erforschung der ntl. Briefliteratur, wie sie vor allem in der amerikanischen Exegese mittlerweile schon Tradition hat, mit einem geschärften Methodenbewußtsein zu überprüfen und durch eine erneute Analyse der brieflichen Rahmenteile weiterzutreiben. The improvement of methods, as this took place in the field of biblical research during the '70s, has refined exegetical instruments by adopting features of linguistics and literary criticism. Consequently, it seems appropriate to re-examine the results of genre-critical investigation of New Testament epistolary literature, as these have been reached through the efforts of American scholars in particular, in order to gain further understanding not only on details but also a more comprehensive total view of the epistolary framework.

Die Publikation der Vorlesung Erik Petersons über fast den ganzen ersten Korintherbrief aus seiner Bonner Zeit (1924-1929) vervollständigt die Reihe seiner exegetischen Einzelauslegungen in den "Ausgewählten Schriften". Ergänzend enthält der vorliegende Band zentrale Teile aus Petersons Überblicksvorlesung zur paulinischen Theologie (1924/25 und 1926/27) sowie weitere kleinere Studien aus dem Zeitraum von 1915 bis 1950. Petersons prägnante Auffassung von Paulus als "Apostel der Ausnahme" bildet den einen, der "altchristliche Kirchenbegriff" den anderen Brennpunkt seiner auf charakteristische Weise, "dialetktischen" Auslegung des ersten Briefs an die Korinther. Dieser Brief gibt ihm die Gelegenheit, vor allem das frühchristliche Selbstverständnis der Kirche (Ekklesia), ihr Wesen und ihre Sakramente, ihre rechtliche Ordnung und ihren apostolischen Charakter in programmatischer Weise zu erhellen. Aber auch zu vielen anderen heute noch oder wieder aktuellen Themen bietet Peterson überraschende und mitunter provozierende Auslegungen: Dazu gehören beispielsweise seine kritischen Anfragen an die neuzeitliche Offenbarungstheologie, aber auch seine Ausführungen zur Äonentheologie und Eschatologie, zur Feier der Eucharistie, zum Verhältnis der Geschlechter in der Kirche, zu den Charismen und zum Wesen der Liebe (Agape). Peterson beweist durch die theologische Durchdringung der exegetischen und historischen Befunde "Mut zur Theologie" (Karl Kardinal Lehmann), was die hier edierten Texte über die exegetische Fachwelt hinaus auch für andere theologische Disziplinen interessant macht. Biblical commentaries generally treat the Pauline letter closings in a cursory manner and are typically at a loss to explain how a particular closing section relates in any meaningful way to the rest of the letter. In this ground-breaking study the author aims to rectify the imbalance that exists in the epistolary analysis of Paul's letters by providing a comprehensive, detailed study of his letter closings. By first surveying the history of epistolary analysis and examining the conventions used in ancient Hellenistic and Semitic letters, the author's examination of the Pauline epistles reveals the closings to be carefully constructed units that relates directly to, or even summarize, the major concerns and themes present in the bodies of their respective letters. This study explores the background, character, and function of Colossians as a form of theological education and appeal in the Pauline tradition. A historical, literary, rhetorical, and narrative analysis of the text shows how its theological affirmations and claims were presented so as to engage the life of its readers in practical ways and in practical contexts, especially in order to direct their moral formation as Christians and their self-understanding as a Christian community in a time of controversy. The specific strategies adopted by the author in designing his message and instructing the readers are familiar from Hellenistic conventions of moral and spiritual guidance, particularly those conventions associated with philosophic paraenesis, or moral exhortation for recent converts.
