English summary: Volume VI of Martin Hengel's 'Selected Essays' contains 17 texts written over a period of 36 years between 1971 and 2007. They focus on aspects of Lukan historiography as the basis for our knowledge of early Christianity. However, the volume also contains studies of the origins of gnosis, the mission of the early church, the early history of Christianity and the history of Christian society as well as crucifixion in antiquity. All the texts have been checked and additions have been made to some of them. They represent a part of the author's scholarly work in the period mentioned. The final volume of the 'Selected Essays, ' Volume VII, which contains historical-theological articles, biographical sketches and detailed indices of Volumes V to VII is in progress and its planned publication date is 2009. Der Autor behandelt daruber hinaus jedoch auch Probleme der urchristlichen Mission, die Ursprunge der christlichen Gnosis, die Kreuzigung in der Antike sowie die Stellung des fruhen Christentums zu Eigentum und Reichtum und zur Arbeit. Weitere Themen sind Grundprobleme einer Geschichte des Christentums im 1. und 2. Jahrhundert, die weibliche Metaphorik im Kirchenverstandnis nach 2Joh 1, das urchristliche Verstandnis der Augenzeugenschaft, die Konigsherrschaft Gottes sowie Qumran und das Urchristentum. Sie zeigen einen Ausschnitt aus der vielseitigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit des Autors in dem genannten Zeitraum. Ein siebter, abschliessender Band der 'Kleinen Schriften' ist fur 2009 in Vorbereitung. Er enthalt historisch-theologische Entwurfe und zahlreiche biographische Skizzen sowie die Indizes zu den Banden V-VII.

Douglas A. Hume offers a narrative ethical reading of the passages depicting the early Christian community in Acts (2:41-47 and 4:32-35). He begins with a methodological exploration of how contemporary scholars may examine the impact of biblical narratives upon reader's moral imaginations. Given the presence of friendship language in Acts, the work subsequently launches into an examination of this idiom in Greco-Roman philosophical and literary works by Aristotle, Plutarch, Diogenes Laertius, and Iamblichus. The author then proceeds to an exegetical examination of how friendship language is employed by Luke in the narrative summaries of Acts. This ethical reading of the Acts 2:41-47 and 4:32-35 incorporates multiple features of narrative criticism and asks such wide ranging questions as the use of emotion, point of view, and characterization to shape the reading audience's perception of God, the early Christian community, and other characters within the story of Luke-Acts. This study has implications for biblical studies, practical theology, and contemporary understandings of ecclesiology.

While scholars of antiquity have long spoken of didactic hymns, no single volume has defined or explored this phenomenon across cultural boundaries in antiquity. In this monograph Matthew E. Gordley provides a broad definition of didactic hymnody and examines how didactic hymns functioned at the intersection of historical circumstances and the needs of a given community to perceive itself and its place in the cosmos and to respond accordingly. Comparing the use of didactic hymnody in a variety of traditions, this study illuminates the multifaceted ways that ancient hymns and psalms contributed to processes of communal formation among the human audiences that participated in the praise either as hearers or active participants. The author finds that in Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian contexts, many hymns and prayers served a didactic role fostering the ongoing development of a sense of identity within particular communities.

In this study, Edwin K. Broadhead's purpose is to gather the ancient evidence of Jewish Christianity and to reconsider its impact. He begins his investigation with the hypothesis that groups in antiquity who were characterized by Jewish ways of following Jesus may be vastly underrepresented, misrepresented and undervalued in the ancient sources and in modern scholarship.
