Das Buch behandelt ausgewählte Aspekte von Negation und Interrogation sowie das Zusammenspiel dieser beiden Phänomene. Eine vergleichende Untersuchung der lexikalischen Negation im Deutschen, Serbischen und Türkischen erbringt neue Erkenntnisse zu Verfahren, die in allen drei Sprachen produktiv sind. Der Vergleich der beiden indoeuropäischen Sprachen zeigt zudem, daß sich hinter den sichtbaren Unterschieden eine verblüffend ähnliche morphologische und semantische Grundstruktur verbirgt. Im syntaktischen Teil werden Ergebnisse sprachvergleichender Untersuchungen zur Stellung des Negators im Satz zusammengetragen und neu gewertet. Daran schließt sich eine empirische Untersuchung der Stellung der Negation im modernen Deutschen an, bei der sich erweist, daß nicht nur sie, sondern auch der Gebrauch von kein versus nicht von den Thema-Rhema-Verhältnissen im Satz abhängig ist. Ein Übersetzungsvergleich zeigt, daß die Thema-Rhema-Struktur des Satzes auch in anderen Sprachen für Skopus und Fokus der Negation ausschlaggebend ist. Als Grundlage für die Analyse des Zusammenwirkens von Negation und Interrogation werden die wichtigsten modernen Beschreibungsansätze zum Status des Satzmodus diskutiert und weiterentwickelt. Die Untersuchung der universellen Strukturen der Interrelation beruht auf einer empirischen Basis, die insgesamt 52 Sprachen umfaßt.

Für die Grammatikschreibung des Deutschen ist die Negation eine Herausforderung. Das betrifft schon das Inventar der Negationsausdrücke wie nicht, kein oder niemand. In welchem Verhältnis stehen sie zueinander, und wann wird welcher Negationsausdruck gewählt? Die Negationspartikel nicht kann in den meisten Sätzen unterschiedliche Stellungen einnehmen, womit subtile Bedeutungsunterschiede einhergehen. Welchen genauen syntaktischen Status nicht hat, ist bis heute umstritten. Die Negation interagiert auch eng mit der Informationsstruktur, die unter anderem durch Intonation und Akzentuierung ausgedrückt wird. Die Intonation negierter Äußerungen und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Bedeutung werden in diesem Buch besonders gründlich behandelt. Schließlich sind zur Bedeutung der Negation selbst noch wichtige Fragen zu klären, unter anderem die, welche semantischen Objekte überhaupt negiert werden können und was genau durch ihre Negation bewirkt wird. Das Buch versucht eine Gesamtschau der Grammatik der Negation im Deutschen, die für Fachwissenschaftler, für Studierende und für allgemein Sprachinteressierte, etwa für Lehrende des Deutschen als Mutter- und Fremdsprache, zugänglich sein soll. This book represents the first comprehensive overview over the history of negation in German. It addresses both the development of the negation particles as well as the diachrony of indefinites in the scope of negation and the phenomenon of Negative Concord. Being based on a corpus study of several Old and Middle High German texts, it comprises a wealth of historical examples with additional comparison to Modern Standard German and dialects, as well as crosslinguistic data from a variety of languages. The findings are placed in the context of typological research and are analysed in terms of current syntactic and semantic theory of negation arguing for an unchanged underlying syntactic structure, with changes in the lexical filling of NegP and in the lexical features of indefinites resulting in crucial changes in the syntactic patterns of negation. This book is of interest to scholars of German linguistics, historical linguists, as well as anyone working in the field of negation.
