Excerpt from Studies in Coral Reefs All atoll lagoons have some shoals, and these are more numerous near their encircling reefs. Where a small horn of a lagoon is nearly enclosed by reef, there may be a shallowing of its waters and many closely set shoals. This is often more noticeable still, as in the south horn of Funafuti, where the greater part of the reef is crowned with land. In such places shoals may be packed between with detritus and added to the encircling reef. In the central sixty or seventy square miles of Funafuti lagoon there are twenty shoals, nearly all of which reach the surface, many being mere peaks, their total area not more than two per cent of the whole. Nearly all these shoals in lagoons arise perpendicularly in their upper few fathoms, falling steeply below to the bottom plateau of the lagoon. There may be some screes, broken-off material from the same, but there is little or no indication of any proba bility of the upgrowth and outgrowth of such shoals at deep levels by living organisms. Excerpt from Beneath Tropic Seas: A Record of Diving Among the Coral Reefs of Haiti The final results will materialize in a series of scientific papers, which, it is hoped, will add something to our knowledge of the life of the sea. These will hardly be read by the general public, hence I have chosen a few high-lights of the expedition and crystallized them into these thirteen chapters. As far as the actual experiences are concerned, any reader of this volume may duplicate them. The diving helmet, hose and pump, with which all the research was done, are as inexpensive as they are simple in Operation. I have had so many inquiries as to the inception and cost and Operation of a scientific expedition, that I have thought it worth while to add several appendices, giving, in brief form, the gist of this information. Excerpt from The Ecology of Coral Reefs, Vol. 3: Results of a Workshop on Coral Reef Ecology Held by the American Society of Zoologists, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 1983 Ronald Karlson summarizes the conclusions of his discussion section on a related topic, life history patterns. An emerging body of research demonstrates that the observed growth rates, form, and longevity of corals along depth gradients result from complex interactions between physical light and wave disturbance) and biotic variables. Recent research shows that sublethal phenomena such as injuries due to physical and biotic agents have significant implications for growth and reproduction in many sessile reef organisms. These processes can vary significantly in different habitats. This discussion group also addressed the important topic of ecological and evolutionary patterns in solitary vs. Colonial organisms on coral reefs. The importance of fission, fusion, and fragmentation (and thus of colony size) in both solitary and colonial species received particular attention as a productive avenue for future research. Mark Hixon lead the discussion section on community structure and function. Coral reef ecologists have been in the forefront of the debate on whether communities are organized by stable predictable processes or whether they merely represent independent populations in shifting states of disequilibria. Encyclopedia Of Modern Coral Reefs written by David Hopley and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-26 with Science categories.

Coral reefs are the largest landforms built by plants and animals. Their study therefore incorporates a wide range of disciplines. This encyclopedia approaches coral reefs from an earth science perspective, concentrating especially on modern reefs. Currently coral reefs are under high stress, most prominently from climate change with changes to water temperature, sea level and ocean acidification particularly damaging. Modern reefs have evolved through the massive environmental changes of the Quaternary with long periods of exposure during glacially lowered sea level periods and short periods of interglacial growth. The entries in this encyclopedia condense the large amount of work carried out since Charles Darwin first attempted to understand reef evolution. Leading authorities from many countries have contributed to the entries covering areas of geology, geography and ecology, providing comprehensive access to the most up-to-date research on the structure, form and processes operating on Quaternary coral reefs.

Excerpt from The Coral Reefs of the Maldives IT had always been my intention, on the completion of my explorations of the atoll and coral regions Of the Pacific, to make an expedition to the Maldives, the only great group of atolls I had not visited, and which promised interesting results; the coral reefs of the Maldives differing radi cally, according to the charts, from every region I had examined.l We spent part of December, 1901, and January, 1902, in exploring the Maldives. The steamer Amra, chartered from the British India Steam Naviga tion Company, proved a most serviceable vessel for examining the coral reefs of the Maldives.2 She was commanded by Captain William Pigott, R. N. R., who proved himself a most careful navigator among the maze of atolls through which we steamed for over sixteen hundred miles. Both he and the Officers of the Amra showed the greatest interest in the objects of the Expedition. Captain Pigott took charge of the sounding machine, and himself superintended all the soundings we took (more than eighty in number); he became exceedingly skilful at this work. Several of the deeper soundings were taken successfully under most trying circum stances. The Amra was equipped with a deep-sea Lucas sounding machine built for me by the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company of London. The machine difiers radically from the American type of sounding machine developed by Captain Sigsbee with which I was familiar, and which I had in commission on all my former expeditions. This is the last of the series of monographs I shall publish on Coral Reefs, and I hope, as soon as practicable, to give a re'sume' and connected account of the results obtained during my expeditions to all the important coral regions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Coral Reefs Of The Red Sea written by Christian R. Voolstra and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-07 with Science categories.

This volume is a complete review and reference work for scientists, engineers, and students concerned with coral reefs in the Red Sea. It provides an up-to-date review on the geology, ecology, and physiology of coral reef ecosystems in the Red Sea, including data from most recent molecular studies. The Red Sea harbours a set of unique ecological characteristics, such as high temperature, high alkalinity, and high salinity, in a quasi-isolated environment. This makes it a perfect laboratory to study and understand adaptation in regard to the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems. This book can be used as a general reference, guide, or textbook.
