This volume is the outcome of a workshop on Ancient Egyptian syntax held in Liege in 2011. The contributions deal with several central topics in syntactic analysis - like coordination, control and raising, gradience, or non-expression of participants - but also investigate the relationship between syntax and other domains, from morphology to pragmatics, with special attention to construction types and grammaticalization processes. The studies cover the whole Ancient Egyptian corpus, from Old Egyptian down to Coptic, in both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. All of the papers share a common concern, namely, the relationship between form and function in Ancient Egyptian grammar. As such, the papers go beyond the descriptive level and address numerous stimulating 'why?' questions.

This is a technical study of Middle Egyptian grammar aimed at enhancing our understanding of tense, mood and aspect; a difficult area of research because, as the author notes, `we have no informants, since the discovered mummies have so far stubbornly refused to speak and are not expected to change their minds in the future'.

The present volume is the long-awaited concordance of the Egyptian coffin texts. It forms the sequel to A Hieroglyphic Dictionary of Egyptian Coffin Texts by the same author. In 1961 A. de Buck published his important seven-volume corpus Egyptian Coffin Texts. The importance of these texts is considerable for a variety of reasons; they are one of the most important literary texts of classical Egypt; the many variants greatly enlarge our understanding of grammar and linguistic structures; the coffin texts are magical texts, the effectiveness of which depended upon the exact reproductions of the original spells. In this concordance the various readings of each lemma are provided in transliteration into the Latin alphabet, which makes the concordance easily accessible for those unable to read hieroglyphs. The material is divided into the morphological categories of the verb; within each category the verbs are treated in alphabetical order.

Written and spoken for about 4,000 years, Egyptian is no longer a living language (Arabic is the major language of modern Egypt); however, ancient Egyptian is still studied by Egyptologists, historians, archaeologists, and students interested in the age-old civilization along the Nile. Typically, students of ancient Egyptian begin with Middle, or Classical, Egyptian, which was written in hieroglyphic script. Middle Egyptian is especially important because it is the language in which many important literary works were written. Moreover, when it was no longer spoken, Middle Egyptian continued to be taught in temples and schools as a vehicle of literary and liturgical expression. This compact handbook, by a noted German Egyptologist, was specially designed for beginning students who wish to acquire enough basic knowledge to enable them to read the easier hieroglyphic texts. Toward that end, the author begins with a general discussion of Middle Egyptian and its script, followed by concise, accessible lessons in phonology, formation and usage of nouns and other parts of speech, and syntax. With careful study, the student should be able, even after the first lesson, to translate simple sentences independently. A list of hieroglyphs, a vocabulary section, and reading exercises complete this handy manual that offers students quick and easy access to the language and culture of ancient Egypt.

The second volume of the ""Reformed Egyptian Grammar"" by Daniel Deleanu, PhD, is an objective study of the syntax of the original language of the Book of Mormon, which he has reconstructed starting from his own ""Rosetta Stone,"" namely the controversial ""Anthon Transcript,"" which he proves to be absolutely authentic, and the so-called ""Ferrini Lead Fragment,"" a tiny piece from a scroll found in Israel that once belonged to Bruce Ferrini, the antiquities dealer who put on the market the Gospel of Judas. Dr. Deleanu clearly evinces Reformed Egyptian's Semitic roots and, through etymological research, its connections with Paleo-Hebrew, with the script it borrowed from Egypt, and, possibly, with several Mesoamerican languages. Daniel Deleanu holds, among other degrees, a doctorate magna cum laude in philology. ""The most important breakthrough in the field of Egyptology since that of Champollion."" Sarah Israelit-Groll, PhD Founder and Head of the Department of Egyptology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
