Excerpt from Studies in German Literature in the Nineteenth Century The present volume of Studies is not a History of German Literature in the Nineteenth Century. It is an attempt to trace the elements of democratic thought in some characteristic forms of this literature. Metaphysical and aesthetic problems were no less influential than those discussed in the following pages; also the craving for beauty, without conscious reference to the problems of social life or speculative thought, had its influence on poetic activity. But the significant influence of political, civic, and social conditions has seemed more fundamental in a first volume of Studies in German Literature in the Nineteenth Century. The writer unhesitatingly confesses that the present volume has been written with a strong bias. To measure the development of the German nation by ideals of American democracy, though not by standards of American living, has been his intention. For he has cherished the hope that the struggle of a people for democratic freedom might be an inspiration to those who would have the code of our living conform to the law of our ideals. Yet a frank declaration of the author's aim may vindicate him in the judgment even of those who have themselves dealt with similar subjects in a more academic fashion. His cardinal purpose has been to draw attention afresh to a phase of contemporary culture thus far not sufficiently heeded by the English speaking world. This is a reissue of Professor Stern's distinguished study of German prose from the death of Goethe to the heyday of the Wilhelminian Empire. Professor Stern argues that nineteenth-century German prose is characterized by a particular combination of the prophetic and the archaic, of the existential and the parochial, and is only partially and sometimes not at all related to the social and political realities of the age. In this sense, German literature of the period stands apart from the main stream of European realism and has, for that reason, received little attention from the common reader outside its own country. The book contains studies of Goethe, Grillparzer, Büchner, Schopenhauer, Heine, Stifter and Fontane, all of whom re-interpreted the world from points of view other than that of the common and commonly explored social certainties of their age. Consequently, Professor Stern suggests alternative criteria to the common notion of realism with which to asses their work.
