Excerpt from Studies in the Elizabethan Drama But unless we adopt the surely untenable theory that the Sonnets, with their passionate sincerity of utterance, the curiously individual note of their complex harmonies, are merely passion according to the Italian Opera, is it not possible that the dark woman, the woman coloured ill, of whom they show us such significant hints of outline, may have turned his thoughts in the direction of Plutarch's story of Antony and Cleopatra? It is possible; and if so, Shakespeare must have felt a singular satisfaction in putting thus to use an experience bought so sorrowfully, with so much expense of spirit; must have felt that he was repaid, more than repaid. Excerpt from The Elizabethan Playhouse, and Other Studies The genial reception given to my earlier book on the Elizabethan Playbouse has encouraged me to issue this Second Series of studies. My chief aim has been, as before, to throw additional light on the obscurities of the Eliza bethan Stage, (and to emphasize the remarkable Vitality of its conventions by demonstrating how many of them contrived to Wind their tendrils round the trunk of early picture-stage dramaturgy. We sometimes forget that if there have been growth and decadence since Shakespeare's time, there has also been a certain measure of continuity) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Studies in the Elizabethan Drama Antony and Cleopatra is the most wonderful, I think, of all Shakespeare's plays, and it is so mainly because the figure of Cleopatra is the most wonderful of Shakespeare's women. And not of Shakespeare's women only, but perhaps the most wonderful of women. The queen who ends the dynasty of the Ptolemies has been the star of poets, a malign star shedding baleful light, from Horace and Propertius down to Victor Hugo; and it is not to poets only that her name has come to be synonymous with all that one can conceive of the subtlety of beauty. Excerpt from The Best Elizabethan Plays In making my selection I had less difficulty than might have been expected. Of Marlowe's four chief works, Tam burlaz'ne is too crude and tedious, in spite of several fine passages 5 Doctor Fausms, though admirable in Outline, lacks interest in detail, and is, besides, permanently superseded by the mighty work of Goethe finally, Edward though its scenes are knitted together more closely than those of its predecessors, and though its murder-scene is indeed masterly, yet as a whole lacks vivid characters. So I have chosen T be few of Malta, which exhibits Marlowe's great qualities and their defects, and which will always be interesting from the comparisons to be made between Barabas and Shylock. Excerpt from Jacobean Theatre The stratford-upon-avon Studies are a new series concerned with literary and theatrical subjects of major interest. The individual studies are neither regular histories nor collections of critical essays written from one particular point of View; rather they are books for any reader seeking a full and informed participation in the literature and drama of which they treat. Because they are the result of the collaboration of groups of writers with varied skills and interests, each book offers not one guide but several, and reflects many kinds of appreciation: This volume on Jacobean theatre is the first of the series. Excerpt from Shakespearean Tragedy and the Elizabethan CompromiseIn making this study of Shakespearean tragedy I am un dertaking to enlarge a great creative synthesis of Shake spearean scholarship, Theodore Spencer's Shakespeare and the Nature of Man, and to supplement a great work of Shakespearean criticism, A. C. Bradley's Shakespearean Tragedy. Profiting from the scholarship on Elizabethan psy chology, social theory, and cosmology of Ruth Anderson, Lily B. Campbell, and James Emerson Phillips, Jr., among others, and from his own research, Spencer re-created a setting against which Shakespearean drama casts off new lights. Today, thanks to him and to E. M. W. Tillyard, whose Elizabethan World Picture appeared shortly after Spencer's book, we are so cognizant of the importance of the Elizabethan concept of hierarchy in human nature, society, and the universe that we can scarcely comprehend how it was almost entirely passed by before. But Spencer only partly fulfilled his purpose of presenting the bistori cal - the intellectual, social, and emotional - background which Shakespeare was able to use, and out of which he grew, 1 for, interested primarily in intellectual history and literary criticism, he confined his comments on Shakespeare's social background to a few perfunctory sentences. I have sought not only to fill in further details in the Elizabethan pattern of belief which he displayed but to show the social causes for the development of this pattern and for the age's intense awareness of the possibilities and consequences of its violation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
