This study offers a fresh approach to the theory and practice of poetry criticism from a narratological perspective. Arguing that lyric poems share basic constituents of narration with prose fiction, namely temporal sequentiality of events and verbal mediation, the authors propose the transgeneric application of narratology to the poetic genre with the aim of utilizing the sophisticated framework of narratological categories for a more precise and complex modeling of the poetic text. On this basis, the study provides a new impetus to the neglected field of poetic theory as well as to methodology. The practical value of such an approach is then demonstrated by detailed model analyses of canonical English poems from all major periods between the 16th and the 20th centuries. The comparative discussion of these analyses draws general conclusions about the specifics of narrative structures in lyric poetry in contrast to prose fiction.

Excerpt from Studies in the Lyric Poems of Friedrich Hebbel: The Sensuous in Hebbel's Lyric Poetry The scope, purpose and method of these "Studies" are discussed at some length in the introductory chapter. The attempt is also there made to justify our investigation of the sensuous element in Hebbel's lyric poetry. This justification is here stated in brief, so that the nature of our "Studies" may be fairly understood at the outset. One may well look with suspicion upon criticism that avowedly confines itself to the material side of poetic invention. As related to the poetic art, such criticism is a species of vivisection; the successive steps are so many incisions into vital tissue that has been mechanically disengaged from the organism. As related to the completed art work, such criticism is a kind of autopsy. The part under examination is dead. It cannot live separated from the vital creation of which it formed a part. And so there is a strong feeling that investigation of mental phenomena should be something more than mere isolation of constituent parts of such phenomena to their mutual destruction. We expect the systematic psychologist to distinguish the mind's various functions and in addition to reveal the fine interfusion, the subtle interplay of these functions in human consciousness. Similarly we wish the literary critic to lay bare the distinct elements that have entered into a work and also to show the perfect co-ordination of these elements in an organic whole.
