The "Prince of Bible Expositors" presents the stirring events of Jeremiah's career in this volume--one of the most oustanding works on this subject ever published. In these chapters, the character of this "prophet of strength and tears" is analyzed and appraised and his dealings with the people are carefully pursued and portrayed, while his "prophetic utterances which constituted the word of Jehovah to a decadent age" are interpreted in a masterly manner. This unabridged edition embraces the penetrating analysis and warm devotional spirit which characterizes all of Dr. Morgan's writing. The world has seen but one G. Campbell Morgan, whose messages are as popular, effective, and inspiring today in printed form as they were when preached from the pulpit. What the artist portrays with his brush, G. Campbell Morgan reveals with his pen, a pen that never rested from its labors in the cause of Christ.

This volume contains the proceedings of a Symposium “Prophecy in the Book of Jeremiah”, arranged by the Edinburgh Prophecy Network in the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, 11–12 May 2007. Prophetic studies are undergoing radical changes at the moment, following the breakdown of a methodological consensus in humanities and biblical studies. One of the challenges today concerns the question how to deal with history in a “post-modern” age. The French Annales School and narrative theory have contributed toward changing the intellectual climate of biblical studies dramatically. Whereas the “historical Jeremiah” was formerly believed to be hidden under countless additions and interpretations, and changed beyond recognition, it was still assumed that it would be possible to recover the “real” prophet with the tools of historical critical methods. However, according to a majority of scholars today, the recovery of the historical Jeremiah is no longer possible. For this reason, we have to seek new and multimethodological approaches to the study of prophecy, including diachronic and synchronic methods. The Meeting in Edinburgh in 2007 gathered specialists in prophetic studies from Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the USA, focusing on different aspects of the prophet Jeremiah. Prophetic texts from the whole Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern prophecy are taken into consideration.

In this study it is argued that the book of Jeremiah was influenced by the books of Amos and Hosea. All three books show a similar pattern of development. There is a correspondence between the reactions of those addressed and the prophetic message, which changes from the preaching of repentance to a message of irreversible judgment. Finally, these prophets testified that only God could bring about a new future. This study, which originally took the form of a dissertation, examines several topics common to Hosea, Amos and Jeremiah. Dr. Lalleman demonstrates important correspondences which point to a prophetic tradition received and developed by Jeremiah in his own way. The research concentrates on the themes of repentance and hope, covenant, and the role of the prophet in intercession, as well as his personal involvement in his message. The differences between these prophetic books, however, show that the individual characteristics of each prophet must not be neglected. The assumption of one monolithic Deuteronomistic redaction responsible for the editing of all the books is therefore unlikely. The prophets are best interpreted in their own historical contexts, although they are connected by a common spiritual heritage, a prophetic tradition.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII IN THE WAKE OF THE REFORM WE have now entered upon the second period of Jeremiah's career. The promulgation of the Deuteronomic law in 621 was an event which could not fail to change the character of his ministry whatever his original attitude to that transaction may have been. From that time till the tragic death of Josiah in 608 we may assume that an effort was made to carry out the legislative provisions of the Covenant; and Jeremiah must have watched with deep concern the effect of the new order of things on the religious temper of the nation. Soon after the death of Josiah the threatening aspect of foreign affairs made Jeremiah a prominent actor on the stage of history, and he continued to work in the full blaze of publicity till near the end of his life. Between these dates there is an interval of about thirteen years during which our knowledge of the prophet's activity is certainly very imperfect. It has been a common opinion among his commentators that so far as extant prophecies are concerned this interval is an almost complete blank in his history. The fact is sometimes explained by the assumption that the conduct of public affairs was very much in harmony with Jeremiah's ideals and gave him no occasion to intervene; sometimes by the suggestion that he had been reduced to silence by the failure of his early Scythian predictions. Neither of these considerations has much plausibility in itself, and the fact which they are put forward to explain is at least incapable of proof. When Jeremiah says (xxv. 3) that he had exercised an unremitting ministry of three and twenty years from the thirteenth year of Josiah to the fourth of Jehoiakim, it would be surprising if more than the half of that period had left no literary...

Excerpt from Prophecy of Religion: Studies in the Life of Jeremiah When the Council of the Cunningham Lecture ship did me the honour of inviting me to be the Lecturer for 1920, leaving the choice of a subject to myself, I gratefully accepted the appointment, and offered a course on the life and writings of Jeremiah. Had I been younger, I should have preferred, instead of adding another to the many books on Jeremiah which have recently appeared in English, to try and break ground in some less frequented field of Old Testament theology. As it was, my choice was influenced by a long-standing interest in the study of Jeremiah's work and personality, as well as a hope that I might still be able to contribute something to an understanding of his message to his own age and to us. The Lectures were delivered, under the same title as the present volume, in New College, Edinburgh, in the spring of 1920, and are now published in accordance with the terms of the Lectureship. I have to express my regret that publication has been unavoidably delayed beyond the allotted period; and also to explain that in preparing the work for the press I have not only expanded the lectures but arranged the matter under other headings and in a somewhat different order. In general, however, the substance of the six original lectures will be found in Chapters I and II; III and IV; VIII; VI and VII; XI; XV and XVIII. The remaining nine chapters are added in order to present a fuller picture of Jeremiah (though still an incomplete one) than was possible in the lectures.
