A discussion by an assembly of expert physicists and materials scientists, embracing the specific features of vortex-pin interactions, the modes of different kinds of vortex motion under the action of Lorenz force, and the mechanisms of dissipation. The effects of transport and screening currents, superimposed AC magnetic fields and the microwave electromagnetic irradiation on vortex behaviour define the electromagnetic properties of a high-Tc superconducting material. The mechanisms driving the depinning of vortices and the dynamics of their motion determine the critical current density and its file dependence, the mechanisms of energy dissipation, and linear and nonlinear resistivity, AC losses, and noise in electronic circuitry. The book therefore has direct implications for the development of new devices and components in electrical engineering, modern electronics, computer technology, and microwave communication.

Superconductivity is now a considerable focus of attention as one of the te- nologies which can prevent environmental destruction by allowing energy to be used with high e?ciency. The possibility of practical applications of sup- conductivitydependsonthemaximumcurrentdensitywhichsuperconductors can carry, the value of losses which superconductors consume, the maximum magnetic ?eld strength in which superconductors can be used, etc. These f- tors are directly related to the ?ux pinning of quantized magnetic ?ux lines in superconductors. This book extensively describes related subjects, from the fundamental physics of ?ux pinning to electromagnetic phenomena caused by ?ux pinning events, which will be useful for anyone who wants to understand applied superconductivity. The Japanese edition was published for this purpose in 1994. Since then, there has been signi?cant progress in the research and development of hi- temperature superconductors. In particular, the new superconductor MgB 2 was discovered in 2001, followed by steady improvements in the superc- ducting properties necessary for applications. On the other hand, there are no essential di?erences in the ?ux pinning phenomena between these new superconductors and metallic superconductors. Hence, the framework of the previous Japanese edition was kept unchanged, while new description was added on these new superconductors in the English edition. In the following the content of each chapter is brie?y introduced.

Physics and Materials Science of High Temperature Superconductors, II represents the results of a fruitful dialogue between physicists and materials scientists which took place under the auspices of a NATO Advanced Study Institute in Porto Carras, Greece, between 18 and 31 August, 1991. It builds on and carries forward the success of NATO ASI 181 published in 1990. The theoretical side of the discussions reveal the basic premise of the phenomenological and Ginzburg-Landau theories of superconductivity, the implications of short coherence length, long penetration depth, the melting of flux lattices, and other matters, while the materials science includes discussions of microstructures, local inhomogeneities, deviations from ideal chemistry, the effects of systematic errors in materials preparation, the definition of imperfections, and the utilization of common materials analysis techniques. The reader will be made aware of the potential significance of Angstrom scale structural and chemical details, and the need to consider basic theoretical concepts when designing procedures to process viable, solid conductors, specifically the effects of oxygen stoichiometry and deviations from it, as well as the microstructural demands on pinning in the light of very short coherence lengths.

Superconductivity covers the nature of the phenomenon of superconductivity. The book discusses the fundamental principles of superconductivity; the essential features of the superconducting state-the phenomena of zero resistance and perfect diamagnetism; and the properties of the various classes of superconductors, including the organics, the buckministerfullerenes, and the precursors to the cuprates. The text also describes superconductivity from the viewpoint of thermodynamics and provides expressions for the free energy; the Ginzburg-Landau and BCS theories; and the structures of the high temperature superconductors. The band theory; type II superconductivity and magnetic properties; and the intermediate and mixed states are also considered. The book further tackles critical state models; various types of tunneling and the Josephson effect; and other transport properties. The text concludes by looking into spectroscopic properties. Physicists and astronomers will find the book invaluable.

This new book focuses on superconductivity which is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense, worldwide, research effort during this time, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such 'strongly correlated' solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic. High-Tc superconductors also have significant potential for applications in technologies ranging from electric power generation and transmission to digital electronics.
