"Studio and Cube is author Brian O'Doherty's long-awaited follow-up to his seminal 1976 essays for Artforum, republished in 1999 as "Inside the White Cube: The Ideology of the Gallery Space." That critically acclaimed volume dissected the abstract, white space of the modern art gallery, calling it "the archetypal image of twentieth-century art." In Studio and Cube O'Doherty turns his attention to the moment of art's creation, exploring the mystique of the artist's studio as the fecund space where inspiration occurs and the artwork is born." "Tracking the relationship between artist and artwork from Vermeer through late modernism, the author considers the differing work spaces of Courbet, Matisse, Rothko, Bacon, Warhol, and many others. He speculates on the implications of the work's transfer from the more anarchic and personal environment of the studio to the art gallery, concluding with a reflection on the way the "unruly energies" of the new media have transformed the classical white-cube gallery today. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the history and issues of contemporary art and the environments in which it is produced. Studio and Cube is the first in the series of FORuM Project Publications produced by the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University."--BOOK JACKET.

Consider the vast array of things around you, from the building you are in, the lights illuminating the interior, the computational devices mediating your life, the music in the background, even the crockery, furniture and glassware you are in the presence of. Common to all these objects is that their concrete, visual and technological forms were invariably conceived, modelled, finished and tested in sites characterised as studios. Remarkably, the studio remains a peculiar lacuna in our understanding of how cultural artefacts are brought into being and how ‘creativity’ operates as a located practice. Studio Studies is an agenda setting volume that presents a set of empirical case studies that explore and examine the studio as a key setting for aesthetic and material production. As such, Studio Studies responds to three contemporary concerns in social and cultural thought: first, how to account for the situated nature of creative and cultural production; second, the challenge of reimagining creativity as a socio-materially distributed practice rather than the cognitive privilege of the individual; and finally, to unravel the parallels, contrasts and interconnections between studios and other sites of cultural-aesthetic and technoscientific production, notably laboratories. By enquiring into the operations, topologies and displacements that shape and format studios, this volume aims to demarcate a novel and important object of analysis for empirical social and cultural research as well to develop new conceptual repertoires to unpack the multiple ways studio processes shape our everyday lives.

This book provides a full-year curriculum for educators wishing to teach a digital photography/multimedia class that will endow students with the technical skills for producing complex digital imaging projects. Digital imaging devices are everywhere, and most households have several—digital cameras, smartphones with cameras, and GoPro action cameras. With the right techniques and software, today's high-tech equipment can be used to create outstanding photographs or stunning digital imaging projects. This book allows any educator to teach digital photography/video and multimedia, regardless of previous experience with digital imaging, supplying tested and proven lesson plans, hands-on project ideas, and grading rubrics for a full-year course. Ideal for middle school, high school, and community college teachers as well as public youth services librarians, particularly those embracing the makerspace movement, Teaching Digital Photography: The Ultimate Guide to 'Tween and Teen Learning provides a detailed educational plan advising how to purchase equipment, set up a classroom or library area to be used for instruction, and instruct the students in the skills needed to become excellent digital photographers. The first half of the book focuses on establishing the class: the general philosophy, the classroom, and the equipment. Three chapters are dedicated to exploring the best ways to teach students the skills of photography, digital image improvement, and digital layout. The final sections of the book provide more than 20 digital layout projects and cover digital video production.

Formerly known as DB2® Warehouse, InfoSphereTM Warehouse enables a unified, powerful data warehousing environment. It provides access to structured and unstructured data, as well as operational and transactional data. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we provide a brief overview of InfoSphere Warehouse, but the primary objective is to discuss and describe the capabilities of one particular component of the InfoSphere Warehouse, which is InfoSphere Warehouse Cubing Services. InfoSphere Warehouse Cubing Services is designed to provide a multidimensional view of data stored in relational databases, for significantly improved query and analysis capabilities. For this, there are particular schema designs that are typically used for these data warehouse and data mart databases, called dimensional, or cube, models. Optimization techniques are used to dramatically improve the performance of the OLAP queries, which are a core component of data warehousing and analytics. InfoSphere Warehouse Cubing Services works with business intelligence (BI) tools, and clients, such as Cognos® , Alphablox, and Microsoft® Excel® , through client interfaces, to accelerate OLAP queries from many data sources. We describe these interfaces and provide examples of how to use them to improve the performance of your OLAP queries.
