Excerpt from Study of Animal Families in Schools Children and animals have always seemed a natural and whole some combination. One hates to think of a childhood without pets. Yet that is the sort of barren childhood which the vast majority of our city children nowadays are spending. There is no place for these little dumb friends in the crowded homes, the crowded streets and the crowded days of our modern city life. As in so many other ways, if old privileges are to be kept for children under new conditions, the school must be the means of bringing this about. If modern city children are to know the joy, the beauty, the significance of animals, it is necessary that they be included in the children's school home. The description in a book is but a tame, a pathetic substitute for the live creature. A chip munk was taken as a visitor to a New York East Side class. Those twelve-year-old children thought the little striped creature was a tiger! They had studied a tiger in a book. To use animals in a school room along with other lessons is quite in keeping with the general loosening up of school practices. It is one more way of letting a child learn through his natural curiosity and pleasure. But, like other expansions within a class room, it involves adaptations. It raises practical problems which need practical answers. Perhaps the answers contained in the following paper may show teachers how to open the doors of their class rooms to admit the historic friends of children - the animals. Natural History written by Worthington Hooker and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-12 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Natural History: For the Use of Schools and Families There are many good books on Zoology, or Nat ural History, as it is commonly termed; but none are properly adapted to instruction in schools. Some of them are too popular in their character, and some, on the other hand, are too scientific, or, rather, contain too many of the details of science; while in all there is too much matter, so that the pupil is confused with the multitude Of things brought to View, and there fore obtains definite ideas of but few of them. I have aimed in this book to avoid these defects. My object has been to cull out from the immense mass of mate rial which Zoology presents that which every well-ih formed person ought to know, excluding all which is of interest and value only to those who intend to be thorough zoologists. It seems to have been forgotten by most writers Of text-books on the natural sciences that a book for common study should be very different from a book for reference. Their books are therefore cumbered with much that is not Of any use to the great body of pupils. The true plan for instruction in schools re quires that, while the class book should contain, clearly stated, only that which all ought to know, the teacher should have some works on the subject Of a more extended character, to which he can refer when ever occasion calls for it. If a Spirit Of inquiry be awakened in the class (as it surely will be if the text-book be of the right stamp and the teacher use it aright), questions will occasion ally be asked which will call for information that must be gathered from larger works, or perchance from the teacher's own observation. This leads me to say that no text-book is rightly constructed that does not excite this spirit of inquiry and observation on the part Of both teacher and pupil. The more it does so, the more fully is the true Object of teaching attain ed; for the communication Of knowledge is by no means Of so much importance as the imparting to the mind the power and the disposition to acquire it of itself. Especially is this true of such a study as Zoology, which presents to the pupil abundant mate rial for observation on every hand, in the garden and in the field, on the land, in the water, and in the air. Excerpt from Heart Culture: A Text Book for Teaching Kindness to Animals, Arranged for Use in Public and Private Schools I have not attempted scientific nature study, but I have earnestly striven to avoid being unscientific, which is, per haps, more difficult. How to care for domestic animals is dwelt upon with considerable detail, because these things must be taught in school to get down into the family life of all the people. Not to know is often as cruel as not to care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Family-school partnerships are increasingly touted as a means of improving both student and school improvement. This recognition has led to an increase in policies and initiatives that offer the following benefits: improved communication between parents and educators; home and school goals that are mutually supportive and shared; better understanding of the complexities impinging on children’s development; and pooling of family and school resources to find and implement solutions to shared goals. This is the first comprehensive review of what is known about the effects of home-school partnerships on student and school achievement. It provides a brief history of home-school partnerships, presents evidence-based practices for working with families across developmental stages, and provides an agenda for future research and policy. Key features include: provides comprehensive, cross-disciplinary coverage of theoretical issues and research concerning family-school partnerships. describes those aspects of school-family partnerships that have been adequately researched and promotes their implementation as evidence-based interventions. charts cutting-edge research agendas & methods for exploring school-family partnerships. charts the implications such research has for training, policy and practice especially regarding educational disparities. This book is appropriate for researchers, instructors, and graduate students in the following areas: school counseling, school psychology, educational psychology, school leadership, special education, and school social work. It is also appropriate for the academic libraries serving these audiences.

Excerpt from Animal Activities: A First Book in Zoölogy The Rook here presented is the outgrowth of fifteen years 0 teaching the subject to large classes in a high school. Its aim is to interest and guide pupils in the study of living animals. Young people are usually ready to be made acquainted with their immediate neighbors in the animal world, and it is hoped that this book may be of assistance to them. In the choice and arrangement of topics the powers and interests of young students have been kept in view rather than the demands of strictly logical description and exposition. Chapter I outlines the animal kingdom in such a manner as to be useful for reference purposes._ Chapter II gives directions for assisting the student in procuring his own specimens for study. Chapter III describes the activities common to all animals. With Chapter IV work on the Arthropoda begins. Animals of this group are selected for the early part of the work because living specimens can be easily collected and observed in the fall, at which time Zoology is begun in most schools. After the study of the Arthropoda, the book follows the natural order, beginning with the simplest animals and ending with the most complex. In some schools it will doubtless be better to begin with Chapter XI, and study the Arthropoda directly after the chapter on The Earthworm This latter order of subjects is advised when the Zoology course begins in the winter or spring. Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology This volume is intended as an introduction to the elements of animal biology for the use of students in the high school. The cut-and-dried method of exposition which is so commonly found in text - books and which so frequently deprives them of all traces of stimulating quality has been avoided so far as was deemed compatible with the presentation of such subject matter as a text-book should contain. Although the book would best fulfil its purpose if read in connection with laboratory work, I have not included directions for such work, partly be cause it would add considerably to the bulk of the volume, but chiefly because so many teachers nowadays prefer to make laboratory outlines of their own. The order in which the main topics are treated is essen tially like that which is followed in several of the best recent text-books. The general experience of teachers of biology has shown it to be eminently desirable that the student should possess a general knowledge of the animal kingdom as a preparation for the study of physiology. The section on the elements of physiology has therefore been placed after the part devoted to a survey of the principal groups of animals. Rather more than the usual amount of attention is given to the role of bacteria in causing disease, and to the way in which diseases are spread and how they may be avoided.
