In den letzten Jahren kam es immer wieder zu Sturzflut- und Hochwasserereignissen, die immense Sachschäden hinterlassen und teilweise auch Menschenleben gekostet haben. Klimaforscher, die Versicherer und weitere Experten gehen von einer signifikanten Steigerung der Häufigkeit und der Schwere solcher Katastrophen in den nächsten Jahren und Jahrzehnten aus. Sturzfluten und Hochwasser können innerhalb kürzester Zeit die Arbeit von vielen Jahren vernichten und ganze Existenzen zerstören. Schlimmer noch ist es, wenn Menschen und Tiere bei solchen Ereignissen ihr Leben verlieren. Dabei ist es möglich, sich, schon mit geringem Aufwand, für Sturzfluten und Hochwasser zu wappnen. Als erstes muss die Erkenntnis stehen: Jeder von uns kann betroffen sein. Für Gewässerhochwasser muss ein Gewässer in der Nähe sein, aber Sturzfluten können, ausgelöst durch Starkregen, jeden von uns treffen. Diese Starkregenereignisse sind sehr schwer vorrauszusagen, haben aber, wenn eine Sturzflut daraus entsteht, eine zerstörerische Kraft. Dies macht Sturzfluten so gefährlich. Wenn dies verinnerlicht wurde, können, mit vergleichsweise geringem Aufwand, Vorkehrungen getroffen werden. Dies geht über die finanzielle Vorsorge, über bauliche Maßnahmen, hin zur Anpassung des eigenen Verhaltens im Katastrophenfall.
