Preface by Kenneth Frampton Moisei Iakovlevich Ginzburg, one of the founders and chief spokesmen of the Constructivist movement in Soviet architecture, combined the talents of scholar, theoretician, writer, and practicing architect. Originally published in Moscow in 1924, his book Style and Epochis considered by many to be the single most important piece of writing on architecture to come out of Russia in this century. It elucidates the aims and ideals of a Constructivist architecture, providing what is essentially an official manifesto of the Constructivist program and becoming the cornerstone of virtually all of the Constructivist writings that followed. Its translation makes available to English readers one of the seminal works of modern architectural theory. Style and Epoch has often been compared to Le Corbusier's Vers Une Architecture(published the year before Ginzburg's book) as a classic of early twentieth-century architectural thought. In it, Ginzburg expresses admiration for the products of engineering and machine technology and voices dismay at the failure to apply the means of that technology to improving architecture. By virtue of his unusually broad education; Ginzburg was able to draw upon elements of Western architecture and literature in such a way as to connect the Russian avant-garde with the simultaneously evolving network of progressive European movements. The result is a cogent analysis of architectural composition from antiquity to modern times in which Ginzburg attempts to plot those universal laws that determine any work of architecture, and proposes a systematic design method that is both rational and humane. An Oppositions Book.

A facsimile edition of Constructivist architect Moisei Ginzburg's landmark 1934 book, which focuses on his iconic Narkomfin building in Moscow. Moisei Ginzburg (1892-1946) was the founder of the Organisation of Contemporary Architects (OSA) group and lead architect behind the first Constructivist building ever built - the Narkomfin building in Moscow (completed in 1932), which is currently being restored by the architect's grandson, Alexei Ginzburg. As part of this unique project, Ginzburg Design Limited has initiated the publication in English of Moisei Ginzburg's four seminal works on architecture and the built environment. The third of these, Dwelling, is published by Fontanka in English for the first time, in a facsimile of the original Russian edition. Ginzburg's first book, Rhythm in Architecture (1923) was quickly followed by Style and Epoch (1924) - the publication that came to be seen as the Constructivists' manifesto, and which was hugely influential in terms of architectural theory, with parallels to Le Corbusier's Vers une architecture. Dwelling, published in 1934, was written just two years after the completion of the Narkomfin building and provides a fascinating insight into the architect's ideas about creating new housing for the socialist city, communal living, and the use of new materials and technologies.

Rhythm in Architecture is the first ever translation into English of a key early Modernist text, written by the celebrated Soviet Constructivist architect Moisei Ginzburg and first published in Russian as Ritm v Arkhitekture in 1923. Ginzburg is most famous for his Narkomfin Building in Moscow, completed in 1932, which he described as a "social-condenser": a radical experiment in communal living. While Ginzburg's second book Style and Epoch, published in 1924, is often seen as the manifesto for Russian Constructivism, Rhythm in Architecture--which preceded it--can be seen as his attempt to create a synthesis in thinking about architecture as a whole, seeking to show how "the true essence of all works of architecture" are "inspired by the laws of rhythm". Rhythm in Architecture is republished in cooperation with the Ginzburg Design Practice run by Moisei Ginzburg's grandson, Aleksey and his partner Natalia Shilova. It is the first of a planned series of reprints of Ginzburg's four books, Home, 1934 and Industrialising Housing Construction, 1937 as well as Style and Epoch, 1924--the only one previously available in English.

* Third in the series of facsimile publications of the work of one of modernism's most famous architects, Moisei Ginzburg, following on from Dwelling (2017) and Style and Epoch (2018)* Published in partnership with Ginzburg Architects, now involved in the restoration of Narkomfin (1929, Moscow) - Moisei Ginzburg's Constructivist masterpiece* Previously unpublished in English and documenting the building of a sanatorium complex in the modernist style at a time when architecture was subject to Stalinist diktatThe NKTP (People's Commissariat for Heavy Industry) Sanatorium was commissioned in 1934 by Grigory Ordzhonikidze, one of Stalin's closest allies and head of the Commissariat for Heavy Industry (he committed suicide after falling out with Stalin in 1937, the year of the sanatorium's completion). Despite the prevailing ideology that sought to outlaw modernism in favour of Stalinist neoclassicism, architect Moisei Ginzburg, with a team that included Ivan Leonidov, Evgeny Popov and Nikolai Paliudov, succeeded in creating an architectural ensemble that essentially retained its modernist integrity - and today remains a masterpiece of 1930s modernism - while making only minor concessions to the new Stalinist orthodoxy. In the early Soviet period, Kislovodsk in the northern Caucasus became known as a center for health spas and sanatoria - 'palaces of health for the workers'. Ginzburg's sanatorium still functions as a therapy center, and retains many of its original features, including windows, light fixtures, some of the furniture etc. This first English-language publication of the original book documenting its creation is an important addition to the Ginzburg canon.

Analyzing "totalitarianism from below" in a crucial area of Soviet culture, Hugh Hudson shows how Stalinist forces within the architectural community destroyed an avant-garde movement of urban planners and architects, who attempted to create a more humane built environment for the Soviet people. Through a study of the ideas and constructions of these visionary reformers, Hudson explores their efforts to build new forms of housing and "settlements" designed to free the residents, especially women, from drudgery, allowing them to participate in creative work and to enjoy the "songs of larks." Resolving to obliterate this movement of human liberation, Stalinists in the field of architecture unleashed a "little" terror from below, prior to Stalin's Great Terror. Using formerly secret Party archives made available by perestroika, Hudson finds in the rediscovered theoretical work of the avant-garde architects a new understanding of their aims. He shows, for instance, how they saw the necessity of bringing elite desires for a transformed world into harmony with the people's wish to preserve national culture. Such goals brought their often divided movement into conflict with the Stalinists, especially on the subject of collectivization. Hudson's provocative work offers evidence that in spite of the ultimate success of the Stalinists, the Bolshevik Revolution was not monolithic: at one time it offered real architectural and human alternatives to the Terror. Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
