Much of the research on Vivaldi's operas has been of a general nature or has focused on extra-musical matters. The rest has dealt for the most part with the late works. 11 Giustino , the subject of this thesis, is an earlier opera which was produced in the carnival season of 1724 at the Teatro Capranica in Rome. Vivaldi was very active as an opera composer. Many of his works were written for Venice (a very important operatic centre at this time) but he produced operas in quite a number of other cities as well. His early works already contained characteristics of what has been called the "Neapolitan" style. Contemporary opinions about Vivaldi's dramatic works differed widely but he composed and produced operas for twenty-seven years, evidence of his success in the field. The libretto of IjL Giustino was written by Nicolo Beregan for a Venetian production in 1683 by Legrenzi. It was subsequently revised by Pietro Pariati and set by Albinoni in 1711. Vivaldi's Giustino incorporates further changes; a similar version was set by Handel in 1732. The plot is very loosely based on the life of Justin I, an Illyrian peasant who rose through the ranks of the Imperial Guard and eventually became emperor. It is a typical seventeenth-century libretto and includes several opportunities for spectacular stage effects. The autograph manuscript of I_1 Giustino is contained in volume 34 of the Foa collection in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Turin. The paper used is quite different from that in most of Vivaldi's other manuscripts, implying that the work was actually composed in Rome. The score is typical of Vivaldi with regards to abbreviations and other graphic characteristics. Generally the composer's intentions are quite clear. Elements of musical style and structure are used quite typically in the work. Some features are reminiscent of Vivaldi's early operas (strong interest in sonority, substantial choruses) while others foreshadow procedures employed in the late works (shorter 'B' sections). Transitional characteristics include texture (occasional use of a homophonic, non-thematic ritornello) and rhythm (the Lombard figure appears). Key association is the most important technique used for characterization but thematic types, rhythm, scoring, and other features also contribute. The work follows an overall tonal plan, beginning and ending in C major, with important recurrences of this tonality elsewhere. There is also an attempt to produce a sense of climax at the end of each act. 11 Giustino represents the only extant, complete operatic score by Vivaldi from the period 1721 to 1726. For this reason and in consequence of its transitional characteristics, the work occupies an important place in the composer's dramatic oeuvre.

Music And The Modern Condition Investigating The Boundaries written by Ljubica Ilic and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Music categories.

Two crucial moments in the formation and disintegration of musical modernity and the musical canon occurred at the turn of the seventeenth and the first half of the twentieth century. Dr Ljubica Ilic provides a fresh and close look at these moments, exploring the ways musical compositions shift to and away from ideological structures identified with modernity. The focus is on European art music whose grand narrative, defined by tonality and teleological development, begins in the seventeenth century and ends with twentieth-century modernisms. This particular musical "language game" coincides with historical changes in the phenomenological understanding of space and selfhood. A key concept of the book concerns musical compositions that remain without proper conclusions: if the wholesome (musical) work is a manifestation of wholesome subjectivity, the pieces Ilic explores deny it, reflecting conflict of the individual with previous beliefs, with contexts, and even within the self as the basic modern condition. The musical work is, in this case, still bounded and well-defined, but fractured by the incapability or refusal to satisfactorily conclude: the implicit cut forced upon it changes the expected musical flow or - speaking in spatial terms - it influences the musical form. By using the metaphor of space, Ilic explores: how the existence of a separate self as a primary feature of Western modernity becomes negotiated through awareness of the subject's own independence and individuality; innerness as something entirely separate from its surroundings; and the collective space of social interaction. Seeing musical storytelling as a metaphoric representation of selfhood, and modernity as a historical continuum, Ilic examines the boundaries and relationships between the musical work, the subject, and modern European history.

"The book combines theory and practice, discussing the theoretical aspects and practical realization of the arrangement of tonal space in terms of their contemporary reception. Brover-Lubovsky's approach is therefore directed toward a study of the musical repertory mapped onto the canvas of contemporary musical thought, including theory, pedagogy, reception, and aesthetics. Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi is a substantial contribution to a better understanding of Vivaldi's individual style, while illuminating wider processes of stylistic development and of the diffusion of artistic ideas in the eighteenth century."--BOOK JACKET.

"In this elegantly constructed study of the early decades of public opera, the conflicts and cooperation of poets, composers, managers, designers, and singers—producing the art form that was soon to sweep the world and that has been dominant ever since—are revealed in their first freshness."—Andrew Porter "This will be a standard work on the subject of the rise of Venetian opera for decades. Rosand has provided a decisive contribution to the reshaping of the entire subject. . . . She offers a profoundly new view of baroque opera based on a solid documentary and historical-critical foundation. The treatment of the artistic self-consciousness and professional activities of the librettists, impresarios, singers, and composers is exemplary, as is the examination of their reciprocal relations. This work will have a positive effect not only on studies of 17th-century, but on the history of opera in general."—Lorenzo Bianconi
