The ancient narrators use a variety of stylistic devices to structure, to connect, and to separate their tales -- and thus to establish contexts within which meaning comes to light. What are these devices, and how do they guide our reading and our understanding of the text? This book explores some of the answers and shows that it's a matter of style. Fr. Jerome T. Walsh, Ph. D., is also author of 1 Kings in the literary commentary series Berit Olam: Studies in Hebrew Narrative & Poetry (The Liturgical Press, 1996) of which he is also an associate editor. He has contributed to such reference works as The New Jerome Biblical Commentary and The Anchor Bible Dictionary and frequently publishes articles and reviews in professional journals of biblical studies. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, with which he has collaborated on the second edition of the New American Bible translation of the Old Testament. He is head of the department of theology and religious studies at the University of Botswana.

Adultery, though not an umbrella concept for all the sexual prohibitions in the Hebrew Bible, enjoys a certain pride of place. Remarkably, it is the one sexual prohibition attested in all biblical genres, which makes it very representative in the Hebrew Bible. It is the only Hebrew biblical sexual prohibition explicitly mentioned in the Decalogue. A solid understanding of Hebrew biblical adultery, therefore, is an important step towards grasping the vital role of human sexuality in the Hebrew Bible, both in terms of inter-human relationships and the relationship between the human and the divine. Without prejudice to the contents of the Hebrew biblical lexicons and theological dictionaries, this work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of adultery in the Hebrew Bible: its meaning, punishments and the implications thereof. The book of Genesis introduces three similar wife/sister narratives, commonly thought to be originating from different sources because of their repetitive entries. This research explores the wife/sister narratives in Genesis (Gen 12:10-13:1, 20:1-18, and 26:1-11), and it aims to provide an understanding of the three stories as a whole by uncovering its context by textlinguistic and literary type-scene analysis. Textlinguistic analysis helps us to see how each wife/sister narrative functions in its context, while type-scene analysis emphasizes how the three narratives develop and contribute to the patriarchal narratives through their similarities and variations. Although the traditional type-scene analysis studies recurrent fixed motives in texts, this study focuses much more on literary aspects such as characterization, theme, and plot. Through this study, the three wife/sister stories will elaborate that the patriarchal narratives are not results of different authors, but the well-developed products of a single author. The three wife/sister stories work together to highlight God's faithfulness to his promises (Gen 12:1-3).
