Vascular dementia is one of the most common forms of mental deterioration for the elderly, second only to Alzheimer's disease. It should not be defined as a single disease, but rather as a group of syndromes that relate to different vascular mechanisms. This is one of the first books to be solely dedicated to the specific class of vascular dementia known as subcortical vascular dementia. The strict focus of the chapters give an depth review that will clarify many different aspects and give an unprecedented amount of detail about this clinical problem. Considering that vascular dementia can be prevented with early diagnosis, the research presented in this book will be important for both students and specialists of this important field.

Subcortical VaD (sVAD) now incorporates the old entities 'lacunar state' and 'Binswanger disease' and relates to small vessel disease and hypoperfusion resulting in focal and diffuse ischaemic white matter lesions and incomplete ischaemic injury. Gait and equilibrium are fundamental patterns of every day's common life and functional independence measures. At the same time, apathy is a main dominant clinical presentation of sVAD, very important in caregiving and life expectance. Though, even not widely considered, these two important, almost fundamental, clinical entities have not been considered widely. We try to detect a definite role of them in sVAD and relate their relationship with anatomical neural system disruption.

A multidisciplinary survey of our current understanding of the biological and clinical aspects of vascular disease. The authors describe its basic mechanisms, its clinical characteristics, its pharmacological management, and the use of neuroimaging methods to investigate it. The complex relationship between VaD and AD is also fully explored with chapters on how these processes interact and how one disease may lower the threshold for clinical expression of the other.

Need to know about BINSWANGER DISEASE: A Form of Small Vessel Vascular Dementia. Binswanger's disease, also known as subcortical vascular dementia, is a type of dementia that involves extensive microscopic damage to the small blood vessels and nerve fibres that make up the brain's white matter. Symptoms tend to begin after age 60 and progress in a stepwise manner. Both males and females are affected by the disease. The damage is the result of the thickening and narrowing (atherosclerosis) of arteries that feed the subcortical areas of the brain. As the arteries become more narrowed (obstructed), the blood supplied by those arteries decreases and brain tissue dies. Binswanger's disease is one of several disorders that fall under the category of vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) that affect blood flow to and within the brain. Clinical and imaging features, neurophysiopsychological profile aid in making the diagnosis. It is strived in this E-Booklet to precisely summarize the Aetiology, History, Clinical presentation , Diagnosis and the Management along with several relevant ILLUSTRATIONS for better understanding the Entity at one click! …Dr. H. Vascular cognitive impairment is the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease and is expected to grow in prevalence with the aging global population. The purpose of this authoritative book is to give a broad clinical perspective on vascular cognitive impairment and thus create a foundation for the implementation of good dementia care. The book focuses on pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It demonstrates the underlying causes of the disorder, such as the manner in which vascular risk-factors influence the onset of vascular cognitive impairment. The concept of mixed forms of vascular dementia, Alzheimer's dementia and other vascular diseases is discussed as well as the influence of vascular changes with regard to the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The detailed section on pathophysiology will enhance clinicians' understanding of this complex disorder. Finally there is a section on pharmacological and neuropsychological treatment of cognitive and psychiatric symptoms.
