Honored by UNESCO’s Memory of the World designation, Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala’s Nueva corónica y buen gobierno (1615) rewrites Andean history in accordance with the author’s goals of reforming Spanish colonial rule in the continent-spanning viceroyalty of Peru. Housed at the Royal Library of Denmark since the 1660s, brought to international attention in 1908, and first published in facsimile in 1936, the autograph manuscript has been the topic of research in Andean ethnology and related disciplines for several decades. The book is divided into two parts. In the first, the reader is taken on an ideal ‘world tour’ of many wonderful and enigmatic places in almost every continent, in search of traces of astronomical knowledge and lore of the sky. In the second part, Giulio Magli uses the elements presented in the tour to show that the fundamental idea which led to the construction of the astronomically-related giant monuments was the foundation of power, a foundation which was exploited by ‘replicating’ the sky. A possible interpretive model then emerges that is founded on the relationship the ancients had with “nature”, in the sense of everything that surrounded them, the cosmos. The numerous monumental astronomically aligned structures of the past then become interpretable as acts of will, expressions of power on the part of those who held it; the will to replicate the heavenly plane here on earth and to build sacred landscapes. Finally, having formulated his hypothesis, Professor Magli returns to visit one specific place in detail, searching for proof. This in-depth examination studies the most compelling, the most intensively studied, the most famous and, until recently, the most misunderstood sacred landscape on the planet - Giza, in Egypt. The archaeoastronomical analysis of the orientation of the Giza pyramids leads to the hypothesis that the pyramids of Cheops and Chephren belong to the same construction project.

In Praise of Historical Anthropology is based on a fundamental conviction: the study of society cannot be undertaken without considering the weight of history and separations between disciplines in academics need to be bridged for the benefit of knowledge. Anthropology cannot be limited to situating its object in its immediate context; rather its true subject of study is society as a historical problem. The book describes the complex attempts to transcend this separation, presenting perspectives, methodologies and direct applications for the study of power relations and systems of social classification, paying special attention to the reconstruction of colonial situations. Esta nueva edición de la Miscelánea Alfonso IX informa de las actividades realizadas por el Centro de Historia Universitaria Alfonso IX (CEHU), Centro Propio de la Universidad de Salamanca, a lo largo del año 2009. Se presenta, en esta ocasión, con el título monográfico de «Universidades Hispánicas: colegios y conventos universitarios en la Edad Moderna (II)», por ser el tema que articuló los XVI Coloquios Alfonso IX, celebrados en los meses de febrero, marzo y abril de 2009, y cuyas actas se publican en la primera sección del libro. Con estos Coloquios, organizados en forma de ciclo de conferencias/ponencias y seminarios de investigación en la Facultad de Geografía e Historia de la Universidad de Salamanca, se continúan y completan una serie de Jornadas científicas, dedicadas al estudio de distintos modelos de colegios y conventos universitarios, y a su interacción con su entorno, en el ámbito territorial hispánico y en el marco cronológico preferente del llamado Antiguo Régimen o período Moderno. Los trabajos resultantes de los XVI Coloquios Alfonso IX, que ahora publicamos, tratan sobre distintos modelos de Colegios y Conventos-Universidad en el marco peninsular, es decir, sobre instituciones universitarias de fundación eclesiástica o particular, con bulas de erección o de ortorgamiento de grados, y reconocimiento regio posterior en la mayor parte de los casos, que tuvieron su fundamentación y mantuvieron vínculos con un colegio o convento preexistente, según la historiografía clásica de universidades. Todas estas universidades también pueden calificarse de «menores» por su limitada función institucional y social, y en relación con otras universidades de mayor proyección, a veces situadas en su entorno, y en particular con las «mayores» de Salamanca, Valladolid y Alcalá. De esta forma, diversos especialistas trazan, en la primera sección del libro, el estado de la cuestión historiográfico de estos centros de estudios; nos presentan una síntesis panorámica de su trayectoria histórica, deteniéndose en los aspectos más significativos y diferenciadores, y nos informan de la bibliografía de consulta. Así, y en relación con el modelo de Colegio-Universidad, se recogen los estudios de Inmaculada Arias de Saavedra Alías (de la Universidad de Granada) sobre Baeza, y de Manuel Casado Arboniés (Universidad de Alcalá) sobre Sigüenza. Por lo que se refiere al modelo de Convento-Universidad, se incluyen los trabajos de Mario Martínez Gomis (Universidad de Alicante) sobre Orihuela, y de José Carlos Vizuete Mendoza (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha) sobre Almagro. Siguen a este bloque de contenidos los estudios presentados en los dos seminarios de investigación que se organizaron en el marco de dichos XVI Coloquios Alfonso IX: Agustín Vivas Moreno (Universidad de Extremadura) plantea, en su trabajo, la necesidad de la creación de Centros de Información y Documentación en Historia Universitaria, y establece una planificación para el establecimiento de estos Centros; mientras que Miguel Anxo Pena González (Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca) analiza los acontecimientos históricos y momentos historiográficos determinantes en la configuración e identificación del concepto «Escuela de Salamanca». En la sección miscelánea de Líneas de Investigación, presentamos, en primer lugar, tres trabajos referidos a la Universidad de Salamanca y sus instituciones: Francisco Javier Alejo Montes (Universidad de Extremadura) elabora una lista completa de los catedráticos que impartieron docencia en la Universidad salmantina entre los años 1575 y 1598, fechas delimitadas por el trabajo recopilatorio realizado en el mismo sentido por otros investigadores. Margarita Ruiz Maldonado (Universidad de Salamanca) estudia diferentes obras artísticas del período Moderno que reflejan la postura continuada del Estudio salmantino a favor de la declaración del dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción. Y León Gómez Rivas (Universidad Europea de Madrid) nos presenta la correspondencia dirigida, en tiempos de la Guerra de Independencia, al rector del Colegio de los Irlandeses, Patrick Curtis, y al que sería su sucesor, Patrick Mangan. Siguen, a continuación, otros tres estudios referidos a otras universidades y ámbitos culturales del espacio hispánico. José María Lahoz Finestres (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) cuantifica la población estudiantil de la Universidad de Huesca en el siglo XVII, centrando su atención en los estudiantes que no obtuvieron ningún grado académico y en sus posibilidades de promoción. Por su parte, Alberto Navas Blanco (Universidad Central de Venezuela) traza los antecedentes históricos del Archivo de la Universidad Central de Venezuela y se refiere al proceso de sistematización y automatización que se está llevando a cabo en el mismo. Por último, Martha Elizabeth Laguna Enrique (becaria de investigación en la Universidad de Salamanca) estudia la figura del obispo Juan José Díaz de Espada, de formación salmantina, una de las figuras determinantes en la introducción de las ideas ilustradas en Cuba. Se cierran los contenidos de la Miscelánea Alfonso IX, como en otras ocasiones, con la información sobre el Centro de Historia Universitaria Alfonso IX referida al año 2009: memoria anual de sus actividades; donaciones registradas con destino a la Biblioteca del Centro, y publicaciones vinculadas al mismo. En dicho año 2009 culminó el Proyecto de Investigación financiado por el Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia y Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), con la referencia HUM2006-03160/HIST, vinculado al Centro Alfonso IX. Por otra parte, se iniciará, a principios de 2010, el desarrollo de un nuevo Proyecto de Investigación del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (referencia HAR2009-06937), también adscrito al Centro Alfonso IX. Ambas circunstancias han contribuido a hacer posible esta publicación.
