Desde fines de la década de 1820 y condicionados por circunstancias casi siempre críticas, algunos grupos indígenas se acercaron a pactar con Juan Manuel de Rosas. Se los llamó indios amigos y en distintos momentos, fueron localizados en las inmediaciones de los fuertes que jalonaban los espacios ocupados por Buenos Aires. Quedaron incluidos, además, en los planes de sujeción al orden que el gobernador tenía para la población de la campaña y la provincia toda. ”Subordinarlos”, “someterlos”, y “sujetarlos al orden”, son las expresiones con las que Rosas explicitaba sus intenciones con los indios. Este libro analiza las formas, los medios y los mecanismos empleados para lograrlo; pero también se ocupa del contacto cotidiano y de las relaciones interétnicas que se establecieron, de las maneras en que los indígenas actuaron y plantearon desafíos, y de las alternativas que se abrieron o las respuestas que dieron los cristianos. La obra se inicia poco antes de la llegada de Rosas a la gobernación de Buenos Aires y concluye tres años después de la batalla de Caseros. El progresivo desgaste de los vínculos y de una modalidad política que se sostuvo con relativo éxito por más de treinta años cierra la historia que se cuenta en ella.

Ramón Carrillo fue el ministro de Salud Pública de Perón durante sus dos primeras presidencias. Su obra como sanitarista es aún recordada como una de las más importantes llevadas a cabo en Argentina. Pero Ramón Carrillo también fue un enérgico teórico que pretendió sentar las bases de una ciencia integral de gobierno. Entre sus muchas realizaciones se encuentra el esbozo de una ciencia a la que bautizó cibernología, una ciencia de gobierno que quiso rivalizar con la cibernética, la cual, por esos mismos años, se estaba desarrollando en Estados Unidos. Entre una de sus ramas, la cibernología incluía una vertiente práctica que, significativamente y adelantándose varios años a la obra de Michel Foucault, adquirió el nombre de biopolítica. Hasta ahora, tanto la cibernología como la biopolítica formuladas por Ramón Carrillo habían sido olvidadas. El presente libro reconstruye en detalle las ciencias políticas creadas por Carrillo, trazando también una historia de la biopolítica en Argentina, es decir, una genealogía acerca de los modos en que gobierno, vida y población se han articulado y desarticulado, desde la época de la Independencia hasta nuestros días. En esta indagación sobre la historia de la biopolítica en Argentina, el problema de la guerra civil (o lo que los griegos conceptuaron como stásis) ocupa un lugar central, trayendo a discusión la índole del enfrentamiento entre peronismo y antiperonismo, pero también un aspecto menos escrutado de los enfrentamientos nacionales: el rol que ha jugado la psicología como arma de guerra. Surveying the expanding conflict in Europe during one of his famous fireside chats in 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt ominously warned that "we know of other methods, new methods of attack. Having identified a new type of war -- a shadow war -- being perpetrated by Hitler's Germany, FDR decided to fight fire with fire, authorizing the formation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to organize and oversee covert operations. Based on an extensive analysis of OSS records, including the vast trove of records released by the CIA in the 1980s and '90s, as well as a new set of interviews with OSS veterans conducted by the author and a team of American scholars from 1995 to 1997, The Shadow War Against Hitler is the full story of America's far-flung secret intelligence apparatus during World War II.
