Popular culture today manifests itself in a dense network of styles and genres, while the aesthetic preferences of the audience are highly differentiated. Besides, popular culture also implies a diversity of aesthetic strategies, discourses and value systems that traverse the symbolic demarcations between styles and genres and are effective across different artistic fields and individual media. Aesthetic concepts such as camp, retro or trash are expressions of a transgressive mode of production that facilitates a multitude of cross-connections between aesthetic spaces of experience. Matt Groening developed together with his friend and colleague David X. Cohen the TV-Show Futurama, set in New York in the year 3000. Groening describes his ‘vision of the future’ in Futurama as corporate, commercial and confusing which is not what he expects it to be, and it is not necessarily valuing this world as good or bad. Thus, the assumption of this study is that Futurama presents a stereotyped science fiction-world that deals with themes and problems of our present time. This becomes clear when looking at the excessive use of allusions and references to political and historical events as well as to popular and classical culture. The creators comment that way on topics that concern us – or at least should concern us – today. The task of this study is to identify these topics and references (focusing on America as a political entity), and thereby discuss the points of criticism Futurama raises.

Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit soll die Zeichentrickserie The Simpsons untersucht werden. Von Kindern mit Bart Simpson-T-Shirts und Erwachsenen mit Sinn für die subversive linksintellektuelle Satire gleichermaßen geliebt, ist der Cartoon ein Phänomen der Popkultur. Als die erfolgreichste im Abendprogramm eines terrestrischen Senders laufende Zeichentrickserie stellen die Simpsons eine der bissigsten Gesellschafts- und Politsatiren dar. In dieser Arbeit soll ein umfassendes Bild der Serie gezeichnet werden. Dabei wird in der ersten Hälfte der Arbeit auf ihre Besonderheiten eingegangen und im zweiten Teil ihre Fankultur und das Verständnis der Serie bei amerikanischen und deutschen Fans untersucht. Seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre entwickelte sich eine neue Generation von Zeichentrickproduktionen, die sich vornehmlich an Erwachsene wendet. Die Simpsons markieren gewissermaßen den Anfang dieser Entwicklung. Anhand der heute populären Cartoonserien, wie beispielsweise South Park oder Ren & Stimpy, sollen die typischen Merkmale des Humors dieser Cartoons aufgezeigt werden. Die Simpsons repräsentieren postmoderne Ironie par excellence. Deshalb wird weiterhin auf die Struktur des Humors der Serie eingegangen. Dabei soll verdeutlicht werden, dass ihr Witz sowohl auf genrespezifischen Konventionen als auch auf subtilen kulturellen Anspielungen beruht. Im vierten Kapitel werden die in der Serie behandelten Themen vorgestellt. In den Simpsons, die als Satire auf Sitcoms der fünfziger Jahre angelegt sind, werden amerikanische Mythen verhandelt, die anhand der wichtigsten Charaktere aufzeigt werden sollen. Die Tatsache, dass die Simpsons auch außerhalb der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika überaus erfolgreich sind, lässt vermuten, dass die Serie an ein universelles Verständnis von Humor appelliert. So stellt sich die Frage, ob es Unterschiede in der Rezeption der Serie zwischen amerikanischen und nicht-amerikanischen Fans gibt. Deshalb wird im fünften Kapitel ihre Fankultur untersucht.
