This dissertation is a study of Aristophanes' Acharnians, with a focus on its protagonist, Dicaeopolis, who dominates the play. Chapter One introduces the subject by demonstrating the importance of Dicaeopolis to past interpretations of Acharnians. Various proposals for identifying who or what Dicaeopolis represents are reviewed. Chapter Two looks more closely at the link between the author and the protagonist in this play. Arguing that the real author's identity would have been unknown to the audience, the chapter concludes by showing that the persona of the poet of Acharnians is based on the persona of Dicaeopolis. Chapter Three is an examination of the transition in Dicaeopolis' persona from country to city throughout the play. This reversal is accompanied by increasing skill, as Dicaeopolis takes on the new and urban roles of trader and chef. His shift from country to city exemplifies Dicaeopolis' adaptability. Chapter Four focuses on the unusually dense patterns of disguise in Acharnians. In each case Dicaeopolis is in control of his own costume and the costumes of his opponents. His control over disguise is accompanied by verbal dexterity and reflects the same quality of adaptability demonstrated in Chapter Three. The conclusion, Chapter Five, draws upon comparison with Odysseus and with other Aristophanic heroes to show that Dicaeopolis, while similar to Odysseus in successful disguising and versatility, is unique among Aristophanes' protagonists in these qualities.
