El escritor, pintor, extraordinario poeta (como se aprecia en la multitud de composiciones de Hongloumeng), calígrafo, músico e incluso notable constructor de cometas (arte sobre el que llegó a redactar un manual), no llegó a ver impresa su obra y los ochenta primeros capítulos de su novela inacabada circularon en copias manuscritas que se vendían en ferias y mercados con el título de Memorias de una roca.
